Indian Coast Guard Saves 12 Seafarers in a Daring Rescue Mission

In a courageous and well-coordinated effort, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) carried out a successful rescue operation, saving 12 lives from a sunken vessel in the North Arabian Sea on December 4, 2024. The incident underscores the ICG’s unwavering commitment to maritime safety and showcases the power of international cooperation.

The MSV Al Piranpir, a mechanized sailing dhow, departed Porbandar, Gujarat, for Bandar Abbas, Iran. However, rough seas and severe flooding caused the vessel to sink early that morning. The distress signal was received by the Indian Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai, setting the stage for a swift and coordinated operation.

Recognizing the urgency, MRCC Mumbai immediately informed ICG Regional Headquarters (North West) in Gandhinagar and diverted the patrolling ship ICGS Sarthak to the probable location of the incident. In an exemplary display of international collaboration, the Indian MRCC also reached out to its counterpart in Pakistan, the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), seeking their assistance.

While ICGS Sarthak raced to the scene, a Pakistan MSA aircraft and the merchant vessel MV Cosco Glory joined the search efforts. The joint operation proved fruitful when the 12 crew members were discovered approximately 270 km west of Dwarka, within Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region. The crew had abandoned their sinking dhow and taken refuge in a small dinghy.

The stranded sailors were brought onboard ICGS Sarthak, where a medical team examined them. Thankfully, all 12 were reported to be in good health despite their ordeal. The crew is now being transported back to Porbandar, Gujarat, where they will be reunited with their families.

This operation highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s readiness and efficiency in handling maritime emergencies. The rescue also symbolizes the importance of cross-border cooperation when it comes to saving lives. Both nations demonstrated that humanitarian efforts transcend boundaries, offering a message of hope and unity.

The Indian Coast Guard operates under the motto “वयं रक्षामः,” which means “We Protect.” This daring mission is yet another testament to their dedication to safeguarding lives at sea.
