The three-day international conference will begin on 18 September 2025 at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad. The program is being organised jointly by India Foundation and the university. The event will take place from September 18 to 20, 2025, at the university’s Jyotirmay campus. The conference will begin at 4:00 PM on September 18.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (often called BAOU) was founded in 1994 through an act of the Gujarat State Legislature. BAOU offers many online and distance education programmes. More than 80 programmes are available. The “Jyotirmay campus” is the name used by BAOU for its main campus in Ahmedabad, giving special identity to its infrastructure.
The theme of the conference is “Dharma – Dhamma.” Many important guests will attend, including the Honourable Governor, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Dr Mahendra Gondia, ministers from Mauritius and Bhutan, Gujarat Minister Rishikesh Patel, Swami Govind Dev Giri Maharaj, India Foundation President Ram Madhav, and the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ami Upadhyay, along with many other respected leaders.
India Foundation is an organisation that works on policy, society, religion & culture, and public awareness. It organises events, research, and discussions. Swami Govind Dev Giri Maharaj is probably a spiritual leader; members of spiritual orders like that often speak at such conferences. Having ministers from Mauritius and Bhutan shows the event has an international reach. These countries have their own Buddhist, Hindu, and spiritual traditions, so they might bring different perspectives on “Dharma – Dhamma.”
This conference will focus on the spiritual and cultural study of “Dharma – Dhamma” and will also highlight the rich traditions and culture of Gujarat. It will give international-level benefits through knowledge exchange. Gujarat has a long history of religious pluralism. Many spiritual traditions—Hinduism, Jainism, Islam, Buddhism, etc. have flourished here. So the conference can draw from local practices.
“Dharma” is a Sanskrit word often meaning duty, ethics, law, or spiritual path. “Dhamma” is the Pali equivalent used largely in Buddhism. So the theme likely connects Indic religious traditions and Buddhist ideas. Knowledge exchange means speeches, papers, and discussions. Scholars, religious leaders, students, and probably community members will share ideas. This can build friendships and understanding across countries.
Representatives from 16 countries will take part in the event, and more than 100 research papers will be presented, according to the university’s press release. Having 16 countries means diversity. Different cultural, religious, and philosophical backgrounds will help in comparing how “Dharma – Dhamma” are understood in different places. Research papers usually cover topics like ethics, rituals, cultural practices, spiritual teachings, and comparative religion.
Some may even focus on how “Dharma – Dhamma” relate to peace, social harmony, and modern life. More than 100 papers are too large for such a conference. It shows many people are interested in studying these ideas. It also means there will be many sessions, maybe parallel sessions, where different papers are presented at the same time.
