A Second Chance at Life: A Gujarati Woman at Kaka Ba Hospital Saves Her Life with Free Cancer Surgery
3rd June 2025, Surat: As part of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), KakaBa Hospital, a charitable hospital operated by Cadila Pharmaceuticals in Bharuch’s Hansot taluka, performed a complex cancer surgery at no cost. This was an impressive example of providing life-saving healthcare without a financial burden.
The beneficiary, Sarala Varasade, 52, of Mandvi in the Surat district, had been suffering from excruciating stomach pains ever since she had a laparoscopic appendectomy in January 2025 to treat colitis and a perforated appendix. Her symptoms continued without a definitive diagnosis despite numerous appointments at different institutes.
Advanced imaging in April verified that the underlying source of the pain was an inflammatory tumour near the ileocecal junction. Dr. Jignesh Patel, a gastrointestinal surgeon, oversaw her care after she was taken to Kaka Ba Hospital. Dr. Patel performed a right hemicolectomy on May 21 to remove the afflicted colonic segment. On May 26, Varasade was released in stable condition.
Adenocarcinoma of the colon, a kind of colorectal cancer, was discovered during a post-operative histopathology study. Chemotherapy has now been recommended for the patient as part of her post-operative care and recuperation strategy.
