Adani Power, India’s biggest private power producer, is taking a significant step towards a greener future.

They are starting a special project at their Mundra plant, which is the largest private power plant in India. This project involves using “green ammonia” to partially power one of their units.

Now, you might wonder, what is green ammonia? Well, it’s made from “green hydrogen,” which is produced through a process called electrolysis. This means they use renewable energy to create hydrogen, and then that hydrogen is turned into green ammonia. The exciting part is that when this green ammonia is burned in the plant’s boiler, it doesn’t release any carbon dioxide (CO2). This is great news for the environment because it provides a carbon-neutral alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

In simpler terms, Adani Power is trying out a way to make its power generation more eco-friendly. They plan to mix up to 20% green ammonia with the usual fuel in one of their coal-fired units. This is part of Adani’s larger plan to reduce the overall amount of carbon emissions they produce.

To make this happen, Adani Power is teaming up with two companies from Japan, IHI and Kowa. IHI is known for its expertise in heavy industry and ammonia firing technology, while Kowa specializes in energy-saving products. They’re currently testing the process at IHI’s facility in Japan, using a 20% blend of ammonia. If the results are positive, they hope to implement this green solution at the Mundra Power Station in the future.

This whole initiative is part of a broader collaboration between Japan and India called the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership. The goal is to ensure energy security, achieve carbon neutrality (which means not adding more carbon to the environment), and promote economic growth. The project has been selected under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization’s (NEDO) International Demonstration Project for Japanese Technologies Contributing to Decarbonization and Energy Transition.

Adani Power’s Managing Director, Mr. Anil Sardana, expressed the company’s commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. He mentioned that they’re excited about blending green ammonia at the Mundra plant and are determined to keep incorporating advanced technologies to further cut emissions in the future. So, it looks like Adani Power is taking a big step towards a more environmentally friendly way of generating power.
