AESL’s Journey To Zero Waste to Landfill Success
Newzdaddy Business Updates
Adani Energy Solutions today said that all its operational sites and corporate headquarters have been certified ‘Zero-Waste-to-Landfill’ (ZWL) by Intertek, a leading global Total Quality Assurance provider. Intertek is a global testing, inspection, certification and assurance company. Its “Zero Waste to Landfill” program is recognised internationally. It verifies that an organisation diverts at least 99 % (or more) of its waste away from landfill by means of reduction, reuse, recycling, or recovery.
The company achieved a 100% diversion rate and 0% landfill waste. Achieving 100 % diversion means none of the waste goes to landfill. That is rare, especially for organisations with many sites and varied operations like transmission utilities. It shows strong process control, waste sorting, partnerships with recyclers, composting or recovery.
“Zero waste to landfill” means diverting at least 90% of waste from landfills, primarily through reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery. It’s a waste management policy focusing on conserving resources by keeping them in use for as long as possible, ultimately reducing the need for new virgin materials and minimising environmental impact.
The 90 % threshold is often a baseline definition; many programs aim higher. Intertek defines levels of “Advanced Waste Diversion” (85–95 %) and “Zero Waste to Landfill” (≥ 99%). Also, circular economy principles (reduce, reuse, recycle) are widely pushed in sustainability policies in India and globally.
This milestone marks a significant achievement in AESL’s ESG journey, which began in FY21 with the vision of positioning itself among the “Top 10 Electric Utility Companies globally in ESG benchmarking”. Many utilities globally now report ESG (environment, social, governance) scores. Such benchmarking encourages firms to adopt cleaner and socially responsible practices. India’s regulatory and investor pressure is also pushing energy companies to adopt ESG goals.
Over the last three years, the company achieved impressive diversion rates of 99.87%, 99.88%, and 99.99% respectively, making it India’s first transmission company to maintain over 99% diversion for three consecutive years. This year too, AESL is the only transmission utility to reach the golden figure of 100%.
Sustaining above 99 % diversion over multiple years is operationally difficult—waste streams, remote sites, transport challenges all matter. AESL claiming “only transmission utility” suggests it is setting a benchmark for peer utilities. Media reporting confirms it is India’s first transmission firm to get this full ZWL status.
AESL’s operational sites are spread across 54 locations in 16 states. Many of these locations are in remote and inhospitable areas, thereby making the ZWL status a challenging one. Remote sites pose logistical challenges: transporting waste fractions, finding recycling partners, and managing diverse waste (electrical components, plastics, metals, etc.). AESL having to standardise processes across 54 locations is a feat in consistency.
This achievement is a testament to the company’s strong ESG commitment, which marries operational excellence with sustainability. When a utility or infrastructure company shows operational excellence aligned with sustainability (not just token efforts), it builds credibility with regulators, investors, and communities. This could help AESL in future projects, green financing, and stakeholder trust.
