Elderly citizens from care homes across Ahmedabad will gather this Saturday for a musical programme celebrating India’s 80th Independence Day.

The weekend event takes place at the ISRO Community Centre, situated along Ambli-Bopal Road in the Vikram Nagar area of the city. Jointly organised by two community welfare groups, Peer Parai and Parivartan, the evening brings together senior residents for a programme of classic patriotic songs.

This gathering marks the twelfth year that the Peer Parai Foundation has organised national holiday activities specifically with residents of local care facilities. For over a decade, the foundation has held these annual reunions to ensure older people living in assisted accommodation stay connected to wider community life during major public occasions.

India celebrates its Independence Day every year on 15 August, marking the date in 1947 when the country gained self-rule. While schools, government buildings, and residential societies hold flag-raising ceremonies and cultural shows, older people living in care homes can sometimes miss out on large neighbourhood gatherings. Group events like the one on Ambli-Bopal Road give residents a chance to take part in the national holiday alongside neighbours, volunteers, and local leaders.

Several regional business figures and community leaders are scheduled to attend the musical evening. Maganbhai H. Patel, a local industrialist and social worker, will serve as the event president. Vinod Agrawal, who previously served as chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Gujarat State Council, will attend as chief guest.

The Confederation of Indian Industry works closely with businesses and government bodies across the state to support trade, industry, and training. Having former leaders from such business associations join community events reflects how regional commerce often supports local charitable work.

Other invited participants include industrialist and community worker Bipin Soni, who joins as a special guest, and Rajkumar Hariram Agrawal, chairman of Disneyland School and a supporter of animal welfare initiatives, who attends as a distinguished guest.

Putting together an event for scores of elderly guests requires weeks of practical preparation. A volunteer team from both organisations has spent roughly four weeks organising transport, seating, music programmes, and accessibility support.

Organisational efforts are led by Sharad Agrawal. The planning group also includes Pramod Gupta, an advocate who serves as secretary for Peer Parai, and Ramesh Jain, who serves as vice president.
