Ahmedabad: Neither dark clouds nor heavy rains could dampen the festive fervour of “Love Dandiya 2025”, organised by the HL College Alumni Association. In fact, the Garba spirit in the rain was visible from the first note.

Held on the lawns of HL College, the Navratri celebration went ahead in true Amdavadi style, with Garba enthusiasts dancing undeterred beneath the rain-soaked skies. Many large Garba events in the city were cancelled due to wet grounds, yet this one embraced the Garba spirit in rain and pushed forward. In nearby Surat, organisers used domes so people could continue dancing during downpours—here in Ahmedabad, the open-air resilience stood out.

The sudden downpour disrupted several other Garba celebrations in the city, forcing many organisers to cancel their events. Yet, Love Dandiya 2025 was among the few events in Ahmedabad where Garba continued in the open, creating a night to remember. While many switched to indoor venues, here the Garba spirit in the rain held strong, making the night extraordinary.

Outdoor Navratri events often struggle when rain arrives. In many parts of Gujarat, events move to domed or indoor venues to avoid weather trouble. For example, in Surat, organisers set up domes to allow people to dance undisturbed despite heavy rains. In Ahmedabad, too, many large Garba events were cancelled or postponed due to rain, making the success of an outdoor one more notable. The sudden downpour disrupted several other Garba celebrations in the city, forcing many organisers to cancel their events. Yet, Love Dandiya 2025 was among the few events in Ahmedabad where Garba continued in the open, creating a night to remember.

Indeed, many big events across Ahmedabad had to be cancelled or rescheduled because of wet grounds, slippery surfaces, or safety concerns. Some organisers chose dome venues or indoor setups so that rain wouldn’t spoil the celebrations. The fact that Love Dandiya 2025 persisted in the open gives it a rare distinction among Navratri events this year.

Rajesh Ravani, President of the HL College Alumni Association, praised the energy and resilience of the participants, saying, “The determination of the Garba revellers was inspiring. The rain only added to the magic of the night, turning it into a memorable celebration. Our annual Garba event has always been about joy and unity, and it truly lived up to its name this year. We are thankful to all the participants for making the event a huge hit.”

The leadership’s public thanks helps build goodwill among alumni and Garba lovers; communal support often helps attendance and reputation for future years. In many Navratri events across Gujarat, organisers express similar gratitude when the weather doesn’t spoil the show—rain sometimes becomes part of the story. This also highlights that for participants, dancing through adversity can strengthen a shared memory and sense of belonging.

Talking about the unique spirit of the evening, Ankit Chadrana, organiser of the event, said, “Love Dandiya 2025 was the only place yesterday where Garba happened in the open lawns with unmatched enthusiasm and unrelenting spirit. It reaffirmed that HL College Alumni Association’s Garba remains one of Ahmedabad’s most anticipated Navratri events.”Many Garba nights in Ahmedabad these days are high-profile corporate or dome events, making community or college-based ones more intimate and awaited. Public statements like this help the event’s brand, reinforcing that “Love Dandiya” is special and different. It also challenges other organisers: if this event could be held outdoors despite rain, perhaps others might plan better arrangements in future years.

The evening showed once again that nothing can dim Amdavadis’ devotion to the Goddess or stop them from dancing on Garba tunes. The phrase “nothing can dim” captures the spirit seen in many news reports: despite weather or obstacles, Garba nights persist in Gujarat. Garba (a folk dance form from Gujarat) is traditionally performed during the festival of Navratri in praise of the Goddess (Amba).  In recent years, Garba in Gujarat has also been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage (the wider “Garba / garbha” tradition from Gujarat). The artistic strength of Navratri celebrations in Gujarat helps many organisers and participants stay committed even when conditions are difficult.
