AI Literacy Workshop Lights Path for Women’s Digital Safety

Newz Daddy Business Updates

A flagship initiative of the National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with Future Shift Labs, YASHODA AI hosted a special workshop at the Institute of Law, Nirma University, Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, 20 September 2025: In a continuing effort to bridge the gap between technology and education, YASHODA AI — a flagship programme of the National Commission for Women (NCW) in collaboration with Future Shift Labs (FSL) — organised a special workshop at the Institute of Law, Nirma University, Ahmedabad on 20th September 2025. This event marked a vital step in sensitising future lawyers, judges, and policymakers to the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the justice system and society at large.

According to recent data, India is seeing more cases in courts involving AI issues—like algorithmic decision‐making, data privacy, profiling, etc. Law students who understand AI can help shape better legal frameworks. Also, many international bodies (UN, EU) are pushing for AI regulation, bias audits, and transparency. These are good precedents that Indian law students can learn from.

As the custodians of justice, law students will play a decisive role in shaping legal responses to AI‐driven challenges, ranging from algorithmic bias in courts and misuse of personal data to the growing threat of gendered cybercrimes. Building AI literacy at this stage ensures that the next generation of legal minds are not just passive observers of technological change, but active defenders of law, ethics, and human rights in the digital age.

Algorithmic bias has led in some places to wrongful convictions or unfair treatment, especially in predictive policing or sentencing algorithms, showing the need for legal oversight.

Misuse of personal data is now regulated under laws like the Information Technology Act in India, and emerging data protection bills are under discussion.

Gendered cybercrimes (harassment, identity theft, stalking) are increasing—law students need tools to identify, respond, and prevent.

The workshop highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming learning, communication, and employment, while also raising new challenges such as misinformation, cybercrime, and online safety. By engaging directly with students, the workshop aimed to build a generation that is not only digitally skilled but also socially responsible in its use of technology.

AI tools like adaptive learning systems are already used in education to personalise pace and content; students who know these tools can use them ethically.

Communication tools with AI (chatbots, voice assistants) raise questions about content moderation and data privacy.

Employment: AI is automating jobs and creating new ones; law careers are also changing. AI can help with drafting and legal research, but the risk of misuse exists.

Misinformation spreads fast; laws and digital literacy are both needed.

Online safety: young people need to know about phishing, deep fakes, privacy settings, etc.

The workshop covered four core themes:

AI in Education and Careers: How AI tools are shaping learning, skill development, and employability.

Many universities globally are offering courses in AI ethics and algorithmic accountability; students with knowledge of AI have higher employability in tech policy, law firms, and compliance roles. Certifications in AI, machine learning, and data science are in demand.

Cyber Law & Women’s Safety: Understanding digital rights, online abuse, and protection against gendered cyber threats.

India has special laws like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), IT Act provisions around harassment, and proposed laws on cyberbullying. Women and girls face harassment online, doxxing, revenge porn, etc. Knowing legal recourse (FIR, complaint to NCW) is important.

Ethics of AI: Tackling concerns such as bias, misuse of data, and accountability in digital systems.

Ethical AI frameworks (fairness, transparency, privacy, explainability) are being drafted by many international bodies. India is also working on an AI policy. Data misuse includes extraction without consent, algorithmic profiling, etc. Students must learn how to audit and question AI systems.

Practical Exposure: Hands‐on training on tools like ChatGPT, Cyber Dost, the NCW Women Safety App, and other emerging platforms.

ChatGPT shows how generative AI can help in drafting, but it can also hallucinate. Cyber Dost is a government initiative in India for cyber safety awareness. Real apps like the NCW Women Safety App help women report abuse and seek help in emergencies. Learning to use these safely and to know the risks is important.

Unlike conventional lectures, the workshop emphasised interactive participation. Students engaged in live demonstrations, scenario‐based discussions, and real‐world case analysis to better understand the opportunities and risks of AI in everyday life.

Research in education shows that interactive and scenario-based learning improves retention and critical thinking. Real case analyses (for example, data breach cases, online harassment cases) help students see consequences and legal interventions.

The NCW Chairperson, Mrs Vijaya Rahatkar, in her address, set the context that: “The role of technology in society must be matched with awareness and responsibility. By preparing young legal minds with digital wisdom, we are investing in a generation capable of upholding justice, safety, and ethical progress in the digital era.”

Digital wisdom” includes understanding privacy laws, the limits of free speech online, responsibilities in social media, and recognising misinformation. Benchmarks show that societies with higher digital literacy have fewer victims of cybercrime.

Adding to this, Mr Nitin Narang, Founder of Future Shift Labs, stated: “Law students are more than learners—they are the future custodians of digital justice. Through YASHODA AI, we seek to inspire critical thinking on the ethics, rights, and responsibilities that define an AI‐driven world.”

Many organisations stress that legal education must include technology, because courts will face cases about AI (e.g. liability when AI causes harm, intellectual property, bias). Critical thinking will help law students ask the right questions—who is responsible, what proof is needed, and who can be held accountable.

This workshop was YASHODA AI’s second engagement in Ahmedabad, reinforcing its growing footprint across India’s student communities and reaffirming its mission to deliver inclusive, accessible, and context‐driven AI literacy for the leaders of tomorrow.

Repeat engagements help build trust and spread awareness. Similar programmes in other Indian cities have shown that repeated workshops lead to more students adopting safe digital habits, more reporting of cybercrime, and more legal discussions around AI regulation in student forums.
