Air Marshal Tarun Chaudhry Begins Critical Lucknow Command
AIR MARSHAL TARUN CHAUDHRY ASSUMES THE APPOINTMENT OF AIR OFFICER COMMANDING-IN-CHIEF, CENTRAL AIR COMMAND
Air Marshal Tarun Chaudhry, AVSM, VSM, assumed the appointment of Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Air Command on 01 June 2026. He was commissioned into the Fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in December 1989. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, College of Air Warfare and National Defence College.
The appointment comes at a very important time for the Indian Air Force as the force continues to modernise its fighter fleet, air defence systems and strategic operations. Central Air Command plays a major role in protecting India’s northern and central airspace. The command is also known for handling key operational duties during national emergencies and strategic missions. Military experts often describe it as one of the most active and sensitive commands of the Indian Air Force because of its large operational responsibility.
During his distinguished career, Air Marshal Tarun Chaudhry,
has held several important operational, staff, and diplomatic appointments, including Defence Attaché at the Embassy of India in Sweden with concurrent accreditation to Norway, Finland and Denmark. Defence analysts have often pointed out that such diplomatic assignments help senior officers understand global defence systems, international military partnerships and advanced technology programmes. Nordic countries are known for their strong defence manufacturing and air combat systems, making the posting highly important for strategic learning and defence cooperation.
He has also undertaken key staff assignments at HQ IDS and Air HQ, specialising in the domains of Projects, Acquisition and Human Resource Management. Defence observers have noted that these departments play a direct role in strengthening combat readiness, improving coordination among the armed forces and speeding up military modernisation projects. Officers who work in acquisition and project management are often involved in planning future combat systems, aircraft support programmes and technology upgrades for the force.
The Air Marshal has spearheaded several transformative projects aimed at capability enhancement and induction of future technologies in the IAF. Before taking charge of Central Air Command, the Air Marshal was holding the appointment of Senior Air Staff Officer, HQ Southern Air Command. The Southern Air Command is responsible for securing India’s southern air space and maritime interests. Defence experts have often highlighted the growing importance of the southern region because of increasing activity in the Indian Ocean Region. Officers serving in senior positions there gain valuable experience in maritime air operations, joint military coordination and strategic surveillance missions.
The National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, College of Air Warfare and National Defence College are among India’s most respected military institutions. These institutes prepare officers for leadership, operational planning and national security strategy. Officers graduating from these institutions are trained in defence management, warfare studies and international security affairs. Defence scholars often state that such academic training helps military leaders handle both battlefield and policy-level responsibilities.
Air Mshl Tarun Chaudhry succeeds Air Mshl Balakrishnan Manikantan PVSM, AVSM, VM, who superannuated on 31 May 2026, after 40 years of distinguished and devoted service to the nation. Senior defence officials and veterans have praised Air Mshl Manikantan for his long contribution to the Indian Air Force. Leadership transitions at this level are considered very important because they shape operational priorities, strategic planning and future preparedness of the force.
The Indian Air Force continues to play a major role in national security through air defence, disaster relief, humanitarian missions and strategic operations. In recent years, the force has also expanded its participation in international military exercises with friendly nations.
