Alembic Pharmaceuticals Secures USFDA Approval for Generic Eye Allergy Drops

The approval for Olopatadine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution 0.7% gives the Vadodara-based drugmaker another product opportunity in the US market, estimated at US$20 million annually.

Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited has received final approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to market a generic version of a widely used eye allergy medicine in the US. The approval covers Olopatadine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.7%, an over-the-counter (OTC) product used for temporary relief from itchy eyes caused by common allergens.

The company announced the development on November 5, 2026. Its approved Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) covers a product that is therapeutically equivalent to Pataday Once Daily Relief, 0.7%, marketed by Alcon Laboratories, Inc.

The latest approval adds another product to Alembic’s growing portfolio of medicines cleared by the American regulator. The company now has 248 cumulative ANDA approvals, comprising 229 final approvals and 19 tentative approvals.

The product contains olopatadine, an antihistamine used to control allergic reactions affecting the eyes. It helps reduce itching caused by exposure to pollen, ragweed, grass, animal hair and dander. These allergens can trigger allergic conjunctivitis, a condition in which the thin layer covering the front of the eye and the inside of the eyelids becomes inflamed.

Eye allergies are a common health problem in the United States. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), allergic conjunctivitis affects up to 30% of the general population and around 70% of people with allergic rhinitis. Common symptoms include itchy, red and watery eyes. Pollen exposure is one of the known triggers, although symptoms can also occur following contact with other allergens.

The 0.7% formulation is sold under the Pataday Once Daily Relief brand by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. Its over-the-counter status allows consumers to purchase the medicine without a prescription, subject to the product’s approved label and usage instructions. The reference product’s label states that it provides temporary relief from itchy eyes caused by common allergens.

The US market for this particular eye drop formulation was estimated at US$20 million for the 12 months ending September 2026, according to IQVIA data cited by Alembic. This figure provides an indication of the commercial size of the product category. It does not represent Alembic’s expected sales or earnings from the new approval.

The approval follows the regulatory route used by pharmaceutical companies seeking to sell generic versions of medicines already approved in the US. Under the FDA’s Abbreviated New Drug Application system, a manufacturer submits evidence showing that its proposed product meets the required standards for pharmaceutical equivalence and bioequivalence to the reference medicine.

An ANDA is called an abbreviated application because the applicant generally does not need to repeat the full clinical trials used to establish the safety and effectiveness of the original medicine. Instead, it must show that the generic product meets the FDA’s requirements for the same active ingredient, strength, dosage form and route of administration, along with other applicable quality and manufacturing standards.

The reference listed drug (RLD) plays an important part in this process. It is the original approved product against which the generic application is assessed. In this case, Alcon’s Pataday Once Daily Relief, 0.7%, serves as the reference product for Alembic’s application.

Final approval means the company has received regulatory clearance for the ANDA. It allows the approved product to enter the US market, subject to applicable commercial, manufacturing and regulatory requirements. The approval does not, by itself, establish when sales will begin or what price the company will charge.

The new application was developed in collaboration with Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies Pvt Ltd. The partnership adds another example of cooperation between pharmaceutical companies in the development of generic medicines for international markets. However, the companies have not disclosed the commercial terms of their arrangement or the expected revenue contribution from this particular product.

For Alembic Pharmaceuticals, the latest clearance brings its cumulative USFDA ANDA approvals to 248. The total includes 229 final approvals and 19 tentative approvals. Tentative approvals indicate that an application has met the FDA’s requirements for approval but cannot receive final approval until the relevant legal or regulatory conditions, such as applicable patent or exclusivity restrictions, have been resolved.

The company has built its pharmaceutical business over more than a century. Its roots go back to 1907, when Alembic began manufacturing tinctures and alcohol in Vadodara, Gujarat. The business later expanded into medicines and other pharmaceutical products. Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited became a separate listed company following the demerger of the group’s pharmaceutical business in 2010.

Headquartered in Vadodara, the company operates in domestic branded medicines, international generic formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Its international business serves markets outside India, with the United States forming an important part of its overseas operations.

Alembic established its US marketing and distribution office in 2015. Its research and development facilities are based in Vadodara and Hyderabad, while its manufacturing operations for international generic products include facilities at Panelav, Karkhadi and Jarod in Gujarat. These operations support its work on developing and supplying medicines for regulated international markets.

The latest approval also comes at a time when generic medicines continue to play an important part in the American healthcare system. Generic products provide alternatives to established branded medicines after meeting the regulator’s standards. Their entry can increase competition among suppliers, although the actual effect on prices depends on the number of companies selling a medicine, supply conditions and market demand.

The US$20 million estimated market for Olopatadine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.7%, allows Alembic to participate in an established product category. The company’s ability to secure a share of that market will depend on its commercial launch, distribution arrangements, pricing and competition from other suppliers.

For the pharmaceutical industry in Gujarat, the approval adds to the international regulatory record of a company with its headquarters in Vadodara. Alembic’s latest USFDA clearance also brings its long-running generic drug development programme to another milestone, with its overall ANDA approval count now standing at 248.
