The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will host the highest number of matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026, with a total of nine matches to be played there.
This grand stadium is located in the Vine City area on the west side of downtown Atlanta. It has a seating capacity of about 75,000 and is owned by the state of Georgia. The stadium stands next to the Georgia World Congress Centre and Centennial Olympic Park.
The stadium has the world’s largest stadium screen, measuring 335 metres in length. It is a multi-purpose stadium with a retractable roof. A 360-degree HD screen surrounds the entire roof, so wherever you sit, you do not miss any action.
The stadium’s signature feature is its retractable roof. It has eight semi-transparent triangular panels arranged like a camera lens. These panels can open and close in about eight minutes. Their design gives the impression of a bird spreading its wings. It is truly a remarkable piece of design and technology.
The stadium was designed by architect Bill Johnson. He said that the circular opening in the roof was inspired by the Roman Pantheon. The roof is made from lightweight polymer materials that control the light entering the stadium. Much of the outer structure is made from transparent polymer or glass, allowing visitors to enjoy views of the city while watching the match.
Below the roof is the famous “Halo”, a ring-shaped video board measuring 58 by 1,100 feet (18 by 335 metres). It is the largest stadium display board in the world.
One interesting feature is that the roof can remain open during light rain. This is because all electrical systems for the video boards are rated for outdoor use, and the pitch has a drainage system. Because of this feature, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is often known as “an outdoor stadium with a roof”.
One of the most special things about the stadium is that it includes contemporary art in both its interior and exterior design. Outside the stadium stands a stunning 41-foot-tall falcon sculpture sitting on top of a football. The falcon has a wingspan of 70 feet. It is a truly impressive sight.
The sculpture weighs more than 33,000 kilograms and is as tall as a four-storey building. Sculptor Gábor Miklós Szőke created the stainless steel artwork called “The Atlanta Falcon”. It is the world’s largest free-standing bird sculpture.
The outer shape of the stadium resembles the wings of the Atlanta Falcons. A 16-storey glass wall provides beautiful views of the city. On the upper level, there is a concourse that runs the full length of the field.
It was the first professional stadium in North America to receive LEED Platinum certification. The stadium also has 4,000 solar panels and collects rainwater for reuse.
This is one of America’s fan-first pricing stadiums, where food and drinks are available at affordable prices.
The stadium is managed by AMB Sports and Entertainment Group, a company owned by Arthur Morris Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons.
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium officially opened on 26 August 2017. Before this, the site was home to the Georgia Dome, which was demolished on 14 May 2014.
The new stadium was built in about three years at an estimated cost of 1.6 billion US dollars (about ₹13,300 crore) and was named the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The first match played at the stadium was a pre-season game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Arizona Cardinals.
Since 2017, the stadium has hosted more than 50 major events, including:
- MLS Cup 2018, attended by more than 73,000 spectators.
- College Football Playoff National Championship in 2018 and 2025.
- Super Bowl LIII on 3 February 2019 between the New England Patriots and the LA Rams, attended by more than 70,000 spectators.
- SEC Championship and the Peach Bowl are held every year.
- Copa America 2024, where more than 70,500 spectators attended the match between Argentina and Canada. A match between Panama and the United States was also played there.
- FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which included six matches, including a quarter-final.
- FIFA World Cup 2026, which will include nine matches, including a semi-final.
The stadium will also host the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2033.
There is another unique feature during matches at the stadium. Whenever the Falcons or Atlanta United score or win, a special train horn sounds throughout the stadium.
This tradition honours Atlanta’s railway history, as the city’s name comes from major railway lines that once passed through the area. The train horn keeps that railway heritage alive.
The stadium is about 20 minutes from the airport, and fans can reach it in just five minutes on foot from the nearby MARTA railway station.
We also travelled from North Springs by MARTA train, got off at Five Points Station, and immediately saw the huge falcon statue and crowds of football fans wearing colourful clothes and decorations, singing and dancing with excitement.
Seeing this atmosphere brought us great joy.
The happiness grew even more because my son, who has helped many of my dreams come true, had booked VIP tickets for the match. We sat in the front rows of the stadium and enjoyed watching the players’ expressions and the beautiful green pitch up close.
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is truly a magnificent place to visit, and I feel fortunate to have experienced a FIFA World Cup 2026 match while sitting inside this remarkable stadium.
A Glimpse of the Matches Played at This Stadium
The first FIFA World Cup match in the stadium’s history was played on 15 June between Spain and Cape Verde. The match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Although Cape Verde was playing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time, their goalkeeper Vozinha made seven saves against strong opponents, Spain and helped his team earn its first-ever World Cup point.
More than 67,600 spectators attended this exciting match.
The second match was played on 18 June between the Czech Republic and South Africa. That match also ended in a 1-1 draw.
The third match took place on 22 June between Spain and Saudi Arabia, with Spain winning 4-0. More than 68,200 spectators attended the match.
The fourth match was played on 24 June between Morocco and Haiti, with Morocco winning 4-2. More than 68,200 spectators were present.
Today, on 27 June, we witnessed an exciting match between DR Congo and Uzbekistan, which started at 7:30 pm.
DR Congo had previously appeared in the World Cup only once, in 1974, under the name Zaire. The team lost all three matches that year against Scotland (0-2), Yugoslavia (0-9) and Brazil (0-3).
This time, however, they produced an outstanding second-half performance and secured a brilliant 3-1 victory over World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan appeared in the FIFA World Cup for the first time after performing well in the Asian qualifiers. They took an early 1-0 lead in the first half and caused many problems for DR Congo.
However, after 52 years, DR Congo returned strongly in the second half and attacked with great energy.
Excellent dribbling, passing, formations, headers, shooting, goalkeeping, teamwork and understanding helped them secure their first-ever victory in FIFA World Cup history.
My son Nisarg and I were proud to witness this historic moment.
During the match, we also experienced the famous Mexican Wave and saw a VAR decision in action. A goal that had initially been celebrated was later ruled out as no goal.
The joy of the goal spread through the crowd like waves in the sea, only to disappear moments later when the decision was announced.
