Sanjay Dutt Launches Book on Sardar Patel’s London Years During New York Event

Veteran Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt celebrated his birthday by launching Barrister Mr Patel, a new book by Indian American producer, entrepreneur and author Jay Patel, at an event in New York. The launch took place during the 150th birth anniversary year of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and focused on a lesser-known period in the life of one of India’s most influential national leaders.

The book looks at Sardar Patel’s years in London, where he studied law before returning to India to build a successful legal career and later join the country’s freedom movement. Although Patel is widely remembered for leading the political integration of more than 560 princely states after Independence, far less has been written about the education and experiences that shaped him before he entered public life.

Speaking at the launch, Sanjay Dutt praised both Sardar Patel’s contribution to the country and Jay Patel’s years of research.

“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the true architect of a united India. During his 150th birth anniversary year, I am proud to inaugurate Barrister Mr. Patel in New York. My dear friend Jay Patel has worked tirelessly on this book. He spent time in London researching Sardar Patel’s life, visiting the college where he studied and the home where he lived. His dedication to preserving this important chapter of history is truly commendable.”

Dutt also referred to the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, saying it reflects the unity, determination and spirit of one of India’s foremost nation builders.

Standing at 182 metres on the banks of the Narmada River near Kevadia in Gujarat, the Statue of Unity is the world’s tallest statue. It was inaugurated in 2018 and has since become one of India’s leading tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors from across the country and overseas. The monument was built to honour Patel’s role in unifying the newly independent nation after 1947.

Jay Patel’s book concentrates on the period when Vallabhbhai Patel travelled to England to study at the Middle Temple, one of London’s four historic Inns of Court responsible for training barristers. Patel enrolled in 1910 and completed his legal studies with distinction. Historical records show that he finished the course in a shorter time than expected while securing high academic honours before returning to India in 1913.

After resuming legal practice in Ahmedabad, Patel gradually became involved in Mahatma Gandhi’s campaigns against British rule. He later emerged as one of the senior leaders of the Indian National Congress and played a central role in negotiations during the final years of the freedom movement.

Following Independence, Patel became India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. His efforts to persuade hundreds of princely states to join the Indian Union earned him the title “Iron Man of India”. Historians widely regard the peaceful integration of most princely states as one of the most important achievements in the country’s early years as an independent nation.

By focusing on Patel’s student life in Britain, Barrister Mr. Patel aims to present readers with a deeper understanding of the experiences that helped shape his thinking before he entered politics. According to the author, the project involved visits to locations connected with Patel’s time in London, including the institution where he studied and the residence where he lived.

Books examining overlooked periods in the lives of national leaders have attracted growing interest in recent years. Historians say such work can help readers understand how education, travel and personal experiences influence future leadership. For Patel, his years in Britain exposed him to the British legal system that he would later work within and challenge during India’s struggle for self-rule.

The launch also reflected the close personal relationship between Jay Patel, Sanjay Dutt and businessman Paresh Ghelani. Jay Patel dedicated the book to his elder brother, Paresh Ghelani, who has remained a long-time friend of the actor. Guests attending the gathering described the occasion as both a literary event and a celebration of friendships that have continued for many years.

The timing added another layer to the programme, as the book launch coincided with Sanjay Dutt’s birthday. Attendees marked both the book’s publication and the actor’s birthday during the New York gathering.

Sanjay Dutt remains one of Hindi cinema’s best-known actors, with a career spanning more than four decades. He has appeared in films across action, drama and comedy genres and continues to work in Indian cinema. In recent years, he has also taken part in cultural and public events connected with Indian heritage and history.

Jay Patel has built a career in business and film production while pursuing historical research and writing. Through Barrister Mr Patel, he brings attention to a period of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life that receives less public attention than his later achievements in India’s freedom movement and nation building.

The launch in New York brought together members of the Indian diaspora, literature enthusiasts and supporters of Indian history during a year that commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Organisers and guests said the event served as a reminder of Patel’s enduring place in India’s history while introducing readers to a chapter of his life that helped prepare him for the responsibilities he would later shoulder as one of the country’s foremost leaders.
