Movie Review: Border 2
I’ve watched Border 2, and after seeing the ending, I realised that because of the teaser, trailer, and nostalgia factor, the audience is already split 50-50. Some people just want to relive the nostalgia and watch the movie in theatres. They don’t care what others are saying about it. For them, it’s all about enjoying the movie and feeling entertained.
Then there’s the other 50%. They’ll watch it only to find faults, troll it, or spread hate. But they’ll still watch it anyway. Now it’s up to you to decide which 50% you belong to.

Let’s talk about what I felt today in the theatre. The movie is grand. The scale is big. No doubt about that. The nostalgia factor works and that’s why people were excited for it. But the number of excited people is quite low. On the BMS platform, interest hasn’t gone beyond 3 lakh. The film is already released, but today’s audience isn’t the same as it was 20 years ago. Today’s audience is quite smart and can understand filmmaking quite well.
Talking about the positives, the first thing that stands out is our Sunny Paaji. The movie starts with him, and even the first half ends with him. He’s like a bridge that connects all the other characters. He is the true leader of this film. His loud, powerful voice feels like that of a lion. The makers have used that voice well. When he shouts, you feel his energy, though sometimes it can get a bit irritating.
The second positive point is the songs. Especially “Sunday Se Aate Hain”, it’s full of pure emotions. The other songs are lovely too. Thank God they didn’t put all the songs in full, the movie would have been 40 minutes longer.
Now, Varun Dhawan was trolled for his smile and accent. I also went in thinking he would mess things up. But he said, “Hold my gun, I’ll show my acting skills with my smile.” And honestly, that’s his natural smile — nothing can be done about it. But believe it or not, he acted far better than expected.
Apart from the main actor, Mona Singh’s performance really touched my heart. She played a soldier’s mother beautifully.
Now, coming to the negatives, the same nostalgia factor that helps the movie also hurts it. The new actors don’t quite fit in, especially Ahaan Shetty, who doesn’t suit his role at all. The VFX also has many flaws, especially in the final battle sequence. It looked so dark as if it was shot in the daytime and later made to look like night.
The movie’s length is another problem. It’s 3 hours and 20 minutes long. They could have easily cut half an hour to make the pace faster and keep the thrill alive. Even the final fight scene felt way too stretched. The person next to me was snoring even with all the explosions and shooting! The battle just didn’t seem to end — bullets, bombs, blasts everywhere — after a point, it stopped being fun and just felt tiring.
I also heard there would be cameos from the original Border film. There are some, but honestly, it feels like a bit of a scam. It was more of a short tribute than anything exciting. So don’t keep your hopes too high.
It’s a decent movie, not extraordinary. The positives and negatives balance each other out — if Sunny Paaji performs well, Ahaan does poorly. If the songs are nice, the VFX disappoints. If the first half is good, the second half is just okay. If the story works, the direction doesn’t shine much.
So yes, the film stays balanced overall. For me, it’s not above 2.5 stars.
- One star goes off for weak VFX.
- One star goes off for making the movie unnecessarily long.
- Half a star goes off for poor casting (Ahaan Shetty).
Still, it’s a family-friendly movie. Keeping the nostalgia in mind, you can give it a try. And if you’ve already watched it, tell me in the comments how you liked it. See you in the next video. Bye!
Newz Daddy’s Rating: I give this movie 2.5 out of 5 stars.
