Sania Mirza, PV Sindhu Say Belief and Support Can Make the Difference as Capri Sports & KPMG Launch Unique Report on Women’s Sports in India
Sania Mirza, PV Sindhu, Atiqa Mir and Deepa Malik were present at the launch of the report and discussed the future of women’s sport in India at length
The launch of the eagerly awaited report, “Women’s Sports in India: Podium to Profit – A Story in the Making,” at the Capri Sports Foundation’s The Sports Women Huddle marked a significant turning point in the history of Indian sports.
A first-of-its-kind in-depth analysis of the commercial ecosystem of women’s sports in India, the research was created in association with KPMG Sports Advisory and includes information on sponsorship, brand partnerships, viewership patterns, and social effect. This thorough study demonstrates the rapid expansion of leagues such as the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the growing social media presence of female players, and the changing fan base, which is now more involved, gender-neutral, and devoted.
The event, which took place on a beautiful Wednesday evening against a backdrop of sporting excellence, highlighted the future of an industry that is about to undergo a significant shift as well as the ascent of women in Indian sports. The event was filled with emotion, pride, and purpose because well-known celebrities like PV Sindhu, Sania Mirza, Deepa Malik, and Atiqa Mir were there. The players talked extensively about their experiences, sharing tales of tenacity and perseverance that led to countless moments of success.
Numerous facets of the women’s sports ecosystem are highlighted in the report, including the Growth Drivers, the Spectators, the Social and Digital Impact and Footprint, the Strategic Investments, and, lastly, the Future Forecast and suggestions for all ecosystem stakeholders.
The report’s main highlights include: • A 150% increase in WPL viewing in a single year; • $63 million in brand investments now go to female athletes; Forty-four percent of Indian gamers are female aficionados. Discussions about women’s sports on social media have increased tenfold. By 2030, the estimated commercial value is $900 million.
“This report is deeply personal, for every young girl who dared to dream and every woman who fought for a place on the pitch,” said Jinisha Sharma, Director of Capri Sports, in a statement on the occasion. In India, women’s sports are a tremendous revolution that has made people pay attention rather than being a quiet movement. In addition to providing data, the study offers a vision of equity, motivation, and limitless possibilities. I implore every company, financier, and innovator to view this as a duty as well as an opportunity. Because funding women’s sports is an investment in a future in which all athletes can succeed.
Sania Mirza, the most successful female tennis player in India, echoed the sentiment, saying, “The belief in female athletes needs to go a long way.” I wish there was a single secret, then. There isn’t. However, I firmly believe that mentorship, media, television, numerous corporate sponsors, and individuals like us (current and former senior players) are striving to piece together the future of this nation in various sports. That is something that I believe will have an impact.
“Belief can move mountains,” said PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist. “As female athletes, we must believe that we are capable of doing anything and accomplishing anything,” she stated. And we should be proud of ourselves, in my opinion. We ourselves, in my opinion, must believe that we are capable of accomplishing anything and that we can go out there and make the world map.
“Women’s sports are not only making progress, but they are rewriting the rules in terms of engagement, commerce, and culture,” stated Kala Anand, Director, Sports Advisory, KPMG in India. We at KPMG are honoured to have worked with the Capri Sports Foundation on a project that showcases the future strategic potential, fan engagement, and commercial viability of women in sports. We anticipate that this report will spur more significant funding, increased media coverage, and a revolution in the sector.
