In recent years, design education has gained strong attention across India. Students are no longer looking only at traditional career paths. Many young learners now see design as a field that combines creativity, technology, communication, business thinking, and innovation. Programmes such as D–Khoj help students understand how design is used in everyday life, from fashion and products to digital platforms, branding, storytelling, and user experiences. The participation of students from several states also showed how design education is attracting talent from different parts of the country.

Under the guidance of Dr Sameer Sood, Director, NIFT Gandhinagar, the initiative provided participants with a unique opportunity to experience the creative and interdisciplinary nature of design education. Emphasising the significance of such programmes, Dr Sameer Sood highlighted that design education today extends beyond conventional career pathways and plays a crucial role in developing future-ready thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers capable of addressing complex global challenges.

Dr Sood has often spoken about the importance of combining creativity with practical learning. He believes that students should be exposed to real-world challenges, industry practices, sustainability, and entrepreneurship from an early stage. His vision for design education focuses on helping students build confidence, critical thinking skills, and an understanding of how creative ideas can solve social and commercial problems. Industry experts have increasingly recognised that design thinking is becoming an important skill in sectors ranging from technology and healthcare to retail and manufacturing.

At NIFT Gandhinagar, design was viewed not merely as a profession but as a way of observing, thinking, creating, and responding to real-world needs. Conceived as a transformative learning experience, D–Khoj enabled participants to move beyond curiosity and gain first-hand exposure to the vibrant ecosystem of professional design education. Through a carefully curated programme structure, students explored how creativity, research, and innovation intersect to generate meaningful design solutions.

This approach reflects a wider trend in global design education. Leading design institutions now encourage students to understand people, identify problems, conduct research, and create practical solutions. Design is increasingly being used to improve services, create sustainable products, strengthen communication, and make technology easier to use. By exposing students to these ideas early, programmes such as D–Khoj help young learners understand how creative thinking can create a positive impact in society.

The boot camp offered an immersive studio environment where participants engaged in hands-on activities, design exploration exercises, and faculty-led mentorship sessions. Moving beyond traditional classroom learning, students experienced the complete design process, from ideation and conceptualisation to experimentation, prototyping, and presentation. The programme encouraged observation, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative expression, helping participants understand the practical applications of design thinking.

Education experts often note that hands-on learning helps students develop skills faster than theory-based learning alone. Studio-based environments allow students to test ideas, learn from mistakes, and improve through feedback. Many successful designers and innovators around the world credit workshop-based learning and mentorship as important parts of their development. Such experiences also help students become more confident when presenting ideas and working as part of a team.

Through interactive workshops and experiential learning modules, students gained valuable insights into the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary design practice and the diverse opportunities available within the design sector. Participants also interacted closely with faculty mentors and experienced the culture of creativity, innovation, and inquiry that defines the NIFT learning ecosystem.

The design industry today offers opportunities across a wide range of fields, including fashion communication, textile design, lifestyle accessories, digital content, visual communication, user experience design, retail branding, animation, and sustainable design. Many companies now actively seek professionals who can combine creative thinking with business understanding. Exposure to such diverse possibilities helps students make informed choices about their future careers.

The successful participation of students from multiple states underscored NIFT Gandhinagar’s growing reputation as a leading centre for design education and talent development in western India. The institute has continued to strengthen its academic profile through industry collaborations, student projects, exhibitions, innovation-focused initiatives, and participation in major national and international events. Students from the institute have regularly worked on projects linked to branding, digital communication, product development, sustainability, and social impact.

Initiatives such as D–Khoj played an important role in nurturing future designers, innovators, and creative leaders by providing early exposure to design thinking, studio-based learning, and the transformative potential of design in shaping products, services, experiences, and systems. As industries continue to evolve and new challenges emerge, programmes that encourage curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving are expected to become even more important. Through D–Khoj, NIFT Gandhinagar has offered young learners a valuable first step into a world where imagination, innovation, and practical thinking come together to shape the future.
