Dismal performance from England openers continues – Newzdaddy

On day 2 at the Edgbaston test, the England openers could not hold for long and were dismissed very cheaply.

Earlier in the morning, India was bowled out on day 2 in the rain-interrupted session at 416.  India managed to score 416 runs thanks to a good recovery from 98/5 to 416 led by Pant and Jadeja.  Jadeja scored his 3rd test Century, while wicket-keeper batsman Pant scored 146.

England started their first Innings with the openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley.  The Indian captain Bumrah took the ball and started troubling English openers. Both Shami and Bumrah bowled great line and length.

Alex Lees was clean bowled when he was on 6.  Alex was unlucky as after he got out, the rain came and the play was stopped.

Zak Crawley was caught at slip when he was on 9. Zak Crawley was unable to find a way to score runs.  He was troubled by Bumrah and eventually got out.

Both the openers were also unable to make an impact against New Zealand as well.  Here is their scores in the test series against New Zealand.

England openers scores in the last 3 tests against New Zealand.

England Openers First Test Second Test Third Test
Alex Lees 25 and 25 67 and 44 4 and 9
Zak Crawley 43 and 9 4 and 0 6 and 25

Out of 6 innings, only one half-century was scored by Alex Lees while Zak Crawley did not give much trouble to the scorers.

However, England has clinched the series 3-0 against New Zealand.

Boom Boom Bumrah

One match captain, Jasprit Bumrah as usual kept bowling good line and length and got 3 wickets.  The rain continues to interrupt the play intermittently on day 2.

Similar to India, England also crumbled at 84 for 5.  The play on day 3 will be very interesting to see whether Jhonny Bairstow and captain Ben Stokes manage to bring their team out of this situation.

However, all eyes will be on the sky, and let’s keep our fingers crossed that the play continues and we see good cricket from both sides.
