Eoin Morgan is anticipated to step down as England’s white-ball captain and leave international cricket on Tuesday.
Since his appointment in 2014, Morgan has been at the forefront of England’s transformation in limited-overs cricket. Revamping the one-day teams and guiding them to their first World Cup in 2019. However, due to his recent form and level of fitness, he has begun to think about his next move.
He frequently suffers from muscle pain in his right leg, which prevents him from playing on consecutive days. On Wednesday, he was unable to play against the Netherlands because of a “groin niggle,” which came after straight ducks in the first two games of the series.
On Sunday night, Morgan was thinking about his future and that he appeared ready to announce his worldwide retirement. It’s anticipated that Jos Buttler, who has frequently filled in as captain, will take his place.

In 2019 and 2020, Morgan displayed some of the best play of his career, but his earnings have fallen precipitously over the past 18 months. Since the beginning of 2021, he has played 48 innings of domestic and international white-ball cricket and has only scored one half-century. Against the Netherlands, he played two innings without scoring a run.
It is unknown whether Morgan will continue to be a part of the system in some form under Matthew Mott, the new white-ball head coach, and whether he will stop playing franchise cricket or do so.
Although Moeen has occasionally filled in for Morgan, he has backed Buttler. He said, “The great thing is he’s been a captain before. “Jos captains the team when Morgs is out since, obviously, he has much more experience now. He has participated in the entire adventure and has traveled the globe playing franchise cricket. He has the necessary skills and is an excellent tactician.”
Prior to the Headingley Test’s final day of play, Nasser Hussain, a former England captain, responded to the news by telling Sky Sports: “The most significant white-ball cricket player England has ever had is Eoin Morgan. He has been a superb player and our best white-ball captain. And at Lord’s, he provided us with the greatest white-ball cricket moment in English history. It was a fantastic day and a fantastic conclusion, and the skipper played a significant role in both.”
