Gautam Adani Launches ₹150 Crore Rural Vision Care Initiative in Bihar with Capacity for 3.3 Lakh Surgeries Annually, Commits An Additional ₹500 Crore for Nationwide Expansion

Mastichak (Bihar), 17 May 2026: Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, has launched a major rural healthcare project in Bihar with a focus on affordable eye care and treatment for poor and underserved communities. The project, announced in Mastichak near Patna, includes a ₹150 crore investment to build one of the largest rural eye care systems in the country. The initiative is expected to handle nearly 3.3 lakh eye surgeries every year and train around 1,000 healthcare workers annually.

The project is being developed through the Adani Foundation in partnership with the Akhand Jyoti Foundation, a well-known rural eye care institution in Bihar. The new facilities will include the Adani Centre for Eye (ACE) and Adani Training in Ophthalmic Medicine (ATOM). ACE will mainly focus on surgeries, treatment and outreach services for villages, while ATOM will train optometrists, ophthalmic assistants and community healthcare workers.

Experts in public health have often pointed out that blindness and poor eyesight remain serious problems in rural India. According to studies linked to the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), cataracts remain one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness in India. Health reports have also shown that many people in villages delay treatment because hospitals are far away or too expensive. This initiative aims to reduce that gap by taking treatment closer to rural communities.

In his message on X, Gautam Adani said that “Seva Hi Saadhna Hai” is more than a slogan and should become a long-term commitment towards society. He said restoring sight gives people confidence, hope and dignity. Many healthcare experts agree that vision care can directly improve education, employment and quality of life, especially in poorer regions where access to doctors remains limited.

The Adani Foundation also announced plans for a 200-bed hospital in Pirpainti in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. The hospital will be built near the Group’s upcoming ultra-supercritical thermal power plant and is expected to improve healthcare access for families living in eastern Bihar. Rural healthcare studies in India have regularly shown that people in smaller towns often travel long distances for advanced treatment. New hospitals in such areas can reduce pressure on city hospitals and help people receive care faster.

A fleet of 10 patient transport buses was also flagged off during the event. These buses will help patients from remote villages reach treatment centres more easily. Doctors working in community healthcare have long stressed that transport remains one of the biggest barriers in rural treatment. In many villages, patients miss surgery appointments simply because they cannot afford travel costs.

Mritunjay Tiwary, Co-Founder and CEO of Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, described the partnership as a step towards restoring dignity and opportunity for poor families. Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital was founded in 2005 as a small 30-bed facility and has since performed more than 14 lakh eye surgeries. The hospital is widely recognised in Bihar for its work in low-cost eye treatment and rural screening camps. Medical journals and social healthcare studies have often highlighted Bihar as one of the states where access to specialised eye care has remained limited compared to urban centres.

The initiative goes beyond Bihar as well. Gautam Adani announced an additional ₹500 crore commitment through a newly formed trust called the “Adani Akhand Jyoti Foundation”. The trust will support affordable eye care and healthcare outreach in underserved regions across India. The total investment, including operating costs, is expected to cross ₹700 crore.

Healthcare observers say that large-scale private investment in social healthcare has become more important in recent years because public hospitals alone are often unable to meet rising demand. Eye care experts have also noted that India still faces a shortage of trained ophthalmic staff in villages and smaller towns. Training programmes like ATOM could help fill that gap over the next decade.

The project also reflects the Adani Group’s wider investment plans in Bihar. The Group has already announced investments worth nearly ₹40,000 crore in the state. These include a 2,400 MW thermal power plant in Pirpainti, smart electricity meter projects in northern Bihar, city gas distribution work in Gaya and Nalanda, and new cement grinding units in Nawada and Muzaffarpur.

Social welfare experts have often said that development projects in Bihar need to include healthcare, education and skill training together if long-term progress is to be achieved. Bihar has one of India’s youngest populations, but many districts still struggle with poor healthcare access and a shortage of trained medical workers.

The Adani Foundation says its Vision Care Programme has already conducted more than 1.93 lakh eye screenings and helped around 59,000 people receive prescription glasses across 11 states since 2024. Community health researchers believe such outreach programmes are important because untreated vision problems in children can affect school performance, while poor eyesight in adults can reduce income opportunities.

The new initiative in Bihar is being presented as a long-term effort to bring affordable healthcare, training and hope to people living in remote areas. With large-scale surgery capacity, new hospitals and rural transport support, the project aims to improve access to vision care for thousands of families who often remain outside the reach of major healthcare systems.
