With a captain’s confident note and a roaring voice, Shubman Gill has laid down the blueprint for the Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2026. Consistency is king, and big runs must become a habit, not a headline.
The young leader, who has quickly become one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket, believes that winning is about the process rather than just the final result. His approach mirrors the success of the most legendary teams in sports history, where steady progress is valued over a single moment of brilliance. Recent reports from sports analysts suggest that Gill’s leadership is built on a foundation of “calmness and security,” a trait he believes allows a captain to see the “bigger picture” during the heat of a match.
“At the end of the day, you have to score more runs than the other team. Whether it’s by four runs or 150–200 runs, the goal is to win. We are not chasing the glory of scoring 300–350 in a single match. We want to be a team that consistently scores big runs and achieves the par target for that wicket,” Gill said while addressing the media during a pre-season press conference in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Gill underlined adaptability as the team’s core mantra: “We want to win matches in different conditions. We don’t want to be a team that performs only on good wickets.” This focus on versatility is backed by the team’s recruitment strategy. For the 2026 season, the Titans have bolstered their squad with versatile players like Jason Holder, who offers both seam bowling and lower-order batting depth. Such additions are designed to ensure the team can compete whether they are playing on a spinning track in Chennai or a fast, bouncy pitch in Mumbai.
Gill also mentioned that “he was dropped from the T20 World cup was a part of Team India’s tactical move and strategy. He has played exceedingly well in the IPL and the T20 format, scoring runs last season as well, and hence he does not need to prove his worth in the T20 format.”
Echoing his captain’s vision, head coach Ashish Nehra said: “Like the captain just mentioned, we want to be a team that can win in any condition, in any situation, home or away.” Nehra, known for his tactical mind and relaxed coaching style, has often stressed that a champion side must not rely on “home advantage” alone. In the previous 2025 season, the Titans showed this grit by reaching the playoffs despite a challenging schedule that took them across diverse venues.
For Gill, personal milestones take a backseat to collective success: “I am not someone who focuses too much on personal goals. Whether I play for my country or the Gujarat Titans, I want the team to win. That is where my personal goal starts and ends.”
Reflecting on his own form and the team’s track record, he added, “Over the last three or four seasons, I’ve been consistent with my performances, and as a team, we have done decently well. If we continue to be consistent, I believe we can win the trophy again.” Statistics bear this out; Gill remains one of the most prolific run-scorers in the league’s history, boasting an impressive average of nearly 40 and a strike rate that keeps the scoreboard ticking without taking unnecessary risks.
Addressing concerns about over-reliance on the top order, Nehra offered a measured defence: “I don’t feel that the middle order was collapsing. The top three, yes, scored a lot of runs and played for around 17–18 overs. That is why the team was in a strong position after 13–14 games. Yes, it was a disappointing end to the tournament. But because those three scored so many runs, the middle order faced very few balls, which is not easy. There might have been one or two occasions in those 14 games where the No. 5 or No. 6 could have finished the game, but didn’t. But it’s not an easy situation.”
Indeed, in 2025, the trio of Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler made history by becoming the first three players from a single team to each score over 500 runs in a single season. While this dominance is a strength, the coaching staff is working to ensure players like Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan are ready to finish games when called upon.
Since their debut in 2022, the Gujarat Titans have emerged as one of IPL’s most consistent sides, with playoff appearances in three of four seasons and a title in their very first year, a record that Gill believes can be built upon. The team’s journey from newcomers to heavyweights is a testament to their stable core.
The upcoming season opener against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on March 31 will be the first true test of this philosophy. Playing at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, the Titans will look to silence any critics and prove that their “all-conditions” strategy is more than just words.
