India AI Hub Adani & Google’s Big Move in Visakhapatnam

Newzdaddy Business Updates

Adani Enterprises, through its joint venture company AdaniConneX, and Google today announced a landmark partnership to develop India’s largest AI data centre campus and new green energy infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. AdaniConneX is a venture created by Adani Group and EdgeConneX to build hyperscale data centre facilities across India. This partnership combines Adani’s strength in infrastructure and power with EdgeConneX’s expertise in operating world-class data centres. The timing is key: India’s data centre industry is currently expanding rapidly. Installed capacity is projected to double in a few years, making such projects essential for supporting digital growth.

Google’s AI hub in Visakhapatnam is a multi-faceted investment of approximately USD 15 billion over five years (2026-2030), comprising gigawatt-scale data centre operations, supported by a robust subsea cable network and clean energy, to drive the most demanding AI workloads in India. It will be brought to life in close collaboration with ecosystem partners including AdaniConneX and Airtel.

The foundational pillars of the Google AI hub, developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX, include purpose-built AI data centre infrastructure in Visakhapatnam that will add significant compute capacity to help pioneer a generational shift in India’s AI capabilities.

This infrastructure will match Google’s global standards—designed for speed, reliability, and scale—just like data centres that power Search, YouTube, Gmail, and Google Cloud. Because much of AI processing needs many servers working in sync, having a large, efficient, well-cooled facility is critical. Also, locating it in India means lower latency (shorter delays) and better performance for Indian users and developers.

The project also builds on both companies’ commitment to sustainability, and will see co-investment in new transmission lines, clean energy generation and innovative energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh. This will not only support the data centre’s operations but also enhance the resilience and capacity of India’s electricity grid. In prior analyses, Google was expected to invest heavily in renewables to back the data centre’s power needs, some of it in solar or wind, plus storage systems to balance supply. Upgrading grid lines and adding storage would benefit local communities too, by stabilising power delivery. Thus, the India AI Hub isn’t just about computing; it’s also about greener power systems and grid strength.

“The Adani Group is proud to partner with Google on this historic project that will define the future of India’s digital landscape,” said Mr Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. “This is more than just an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in the soul of a rising nation. This partnership is a testament to our shared vision of nation-building and our commitment to empowering every Indian with the tools of the 21st century. Visakhapatnam is now set to become a global destination for technology, and we are thrilled to be the architects of this monumental journey.”

“To unlock India’s massive potential in the AI age, we are investing in the Google AI hub, which will provide the critical foundation to drive growth and enable businesses, researchers, and creators to build and scale with AI,” added Mr Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud. “Working with Adani, we will bring our cutting-edge resources closer to communities and customers alike, and offer them the performance, security, and scalability to innovate and thrive on a global stage.”

Kurian has emphasised that this hub will cut delays for Indian AI workloads. Having an India AI Hub also means data is stored, processed, and trusted within the country, which helps with local privacy laws and regulations. The development of this AI hub and connectivity gateway will create a powerful engine for economic growth in Visakhapatnam, the state of Andhra Pradesh, and thereafter the entire nation by driving digital inclusivity and creating tens of thousands of jobs in technology, construction and clean energy.
Such mega projects generate direct jobs.

AdaniConneX is a joint venture between Adani Group and EdgeConneX. India’s data centre industry is growing fast. The country’s installed capacity is expected to double in a few years.  EdgeConneX brings global know-how; Adani brings local infrastructure and power expertise. It will be brought to life in close collaboration with ecosystem partners, including AdaniConneX and Airtel.

Some earlier reports estimated a $6 billion investment and 1 gigawatt (GW) capacity for the data centre itself, with about $2 billion earmarked for renewable energy. The subsea cable (undersea fibre optic link) is critical to connect India to global internet networks. Airtel, as a telecom partner, will help provide connectivity, network, and possibly fibre infrastructure. The foundational pillars of the Google AI hub, developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX, include purpose-built AI data centre infrastructure in Visakhapatnam that will add significant compute capacity to help pioneer a generational shift in India’s AI capabilities. The data centre will use the same high design standards that Google uses for its global services (Search, YouTube, etc.). Gigawatt-scale” implies thousands of servers, and huge power and cooling needs. Having a computer close by reduces delay (latency) and improves performance for Indian users

The project also builds on both companies’ commitment to sustainability, and will see co-investment in new transmission lines, clean energy generation and innovative energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh. This will not only support the data centre’s operations but also enhance the resilience and capacity of India’s electricity grid.

Google plans to spend a portion (around $2 billion in earlier estimates) specifically for renewable energy to power the facility. Upgrading transmission lines and storage helps the local power grid, benefiting surrounding communities too.  These may include battery banks or other methods to smooth out intermittent renewable sources like solar.

Adani has been making big infrastructure bets in India across power, ports, logistics, etc. This aligns with its push into data infrastructure. Projects like this tend to attract other tech firms, creating a cluster effect in Visakhapatnam. Indeed, the city is emerging as a data centre hub already.

Thomas Kurian says this AI hub will reduce latency for Indian developers and make it easier to run advanced AI workloads locally.  India’s ambition is to become a global AI hub, and infrastructure like this is a key piece. Having local infrastructure also helps with data sovereignty, compliance, and trust.

The development of this AI hub and connectivity gateway will create a powerful engine for economic growth in Visakhapatnam, the state of Andhra Pradesh, and thereafter the entire nation by driving digital inclusivity and creating tens of thousands of jobs in technology, construction and clean energy.

Large projects like this typically create direct and indirect jobs: in construction, energy, IT staff, operations staff, and vendor services.  Visakhapatnam is already seeing approval for several large data centre projects across its region.  Improved internet infrastructure, better power, more talent staying locally, and many sectors benefit.
