India Aims for 2036 Olympics, But Gujarat Still Waiting for Physical Education Teachers
While India dreams big for international sports, Gujarat’s local sports system struggles without enough PE teachers
India is making big plans to host the Olympic Games in the year 2036. The central government is actively working towards bringing this mega international sports event to the country. This would be a proud moment for India, showcasing the nation’s growing strength and enthusiasm for sports on the global stage.
But at the same time, something important is being neglected at the state level – especially in Gujarat. For the past 10 to 15 years, the recruitment process for physical education (PE) teachers in government and grant-in-aid schools across Gujarat has been completely stalled. This issue affects schools at all levels – primary, secondary, and higher secondary and because of this, the students are the ones suffering the most.
In today’s world, sports and physical activity are as important as academics. Physical education not only keeps children fit and healthy but also teaches them discipline, teamwork, and confidence. However, without proper PE teachers in schools, students are missing out on these crucial life lessons.
Due to this ongoing issue, a large number of sports assistants who were either working temporarily or expecting full-time roles, have been protesting for quite some time now. They are requesting the government to immediately start the recruitment process for PE teachers in Gujarat’s schools. Many of these sports assistants have been working tirelessly for years with very little pay and no job security.
Kreeda Bharati Extends Its Support
Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Kreeda Bharati – Gujarat, a well-known organization that promotes sports and youth development, has come forward in support of the protesting sports assistants. On April 8, Kreeda Bharati took a major step by submitting memorandums to District Collectors across Gujarat, urging the state government to look into this issue seriously and start hiring PE teachers without further delay.
Kreeda Bharati believes that if India is aiming to host the 2036 Olympics, it must also strengthen its grassroots sports system. That starts with providing quality physical education in schools.
A major event was organized by Kreeda Bharati in Ahmedabad, where a large number of workers and volunteers gathered and met with the Ahmedabad District Collector. The team was led by Mr. Rameshbhai Prajapati, West Zone Coordinator of Kreeda Bharati, and Mr. Pratapsinh Zala, President of Kreeda Bharati – Karnavati Mahanagar. They handed over a formal letter requesting the government to begin the recruitment process for physical education teachers on an urgent basis.
This movement was not limited to Ahmedabad. Similar memorandums were submitted in many other major districts such as:
- Mehsana
- Patan
- Vadodara
- Surat
- Tapi
- Sabarkantha
- Anand
- Palanpur
- Navsari
In each district, many people took part in the initiative. Sports assistants, teachers, students, former athletes, and Kreeda Bharati volunteers joined hands to make their voices heard.
Let’s take a moment to understand why this issue is so important. Gujarat has a large number of government and grant-in-aid schools. Without trained and appointed physical education teachers, thousands of students are losing the opportunity to develop physically and mentally through sports.
Moreover, Gujarat has produced many talented athletes who have gone on to win national and international medals. But without basic sports education and guidance from trained PE teachers, such talent may go unnoticed and undeveloped.
If the recruitment is not done soon, we may risk losing an entire generation of potential sportspersons.
Hosting the Olympics is a matter of pride for any country. It requires not just stadiums and infrastructure, but also a strong sports culture, right from the grassroots level. That starts in schools, where children first get introduced to sports.
If there are no PE teachers, how will children learn the basics of sports? How will they develop interest and skills in athletics, football, volleyball, kabaddi, or even traditional Indian sports?
The government must realize that preparing for the Olympics begins by investing in school sports and ensuring trained physical education teachers are present in every school.
The demands of the protesting sports assistants and Kreeda Bharati are clear:
- The government should immediately start the recruitment process for PE teachers.
- All pending job applications and recruitment notifications should be released.
- Contract-based sports assistants working for years should be considered for permanent roles.
- School-level sports programs should be revived and supported with proper staff.
These demands are not unreasonable. They reflect the genuine need for strengthening the foundation of sports in the state.
Kreeda Bharati’s statewide memorandum submission is not just a protest – it is a call to action. It reminds the government and society that while we aim for Olympic glory, we must not forget our own children who are waiting for proper guidance in sports.
If India truly wants to become a sporting powerhouse, then every state – including Gujarat – must ensure that sports education is given the importance it deserves.
The ball is now in the government’s court. Will it take the right steps in time?
