India-US Trade Tariffs Surge Over Russian Oil Deal. Trump’s Shocking 50% Tariff

In the midst of a tariff fight, Donald Trump says he will not hold trade talks with India until…

The White House announced additional 25% tariffs on India for buying Russian oil in an executive order the day before Trump’s comment.

President Donald Trump of the United States has stated that trade talks with India are not possible until the tariff problem is settled. As a punishment for purchasing oil from Russia, the United States has placed 50% tariffs on India, half of which went into force on Thursday and the other half of which will go into effect on August 27.

Trump shrugged his shoulders and said, “No, not until we get it resolved,” in response to a reporter’s question about whether he anticipates more trade talks with India following the announcement of 50% tariffs.

Trump’s comment follows the White House’s executive order on Wednesday, which announced additional 25% tariffs on India for doing business with Russia. The executive order claims that the levies “undermine US efforts to counter Russia’s harmful activities.”

The White House went on to say that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was made possible by “India’s subsequent reselling of this oil on the open market, often at significant profit, further enables the Russian Federation’s economy to fund its aggression.”

Additionally, it stated that President Trump wants to “impose serious economic consequences on the Russian Federation for its ongoing aggressions and deter countries from supporting the Russian Federation’s economy through oil imports” by enacting a 25% tax.

Following the US’s announcement of a total of 50% tariffs on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India will never sacrifice the interests of its farmers, even if doing so had negative economic repercussions.

He declared that India was “ready” to “pay a heavy price for it” and referred to the interests of the farmers as his “top priority.”

“Our farmers’ interests are our first concern. The interests of dairy farmers, fishermen, and farmers in general will never be compromised in India. I am prepared to pay the high price we will have to pay for it. He declared, “India is prepared for it.”
