Rashtriya Raksha University Strengthens Global Ties at the BRICS Universities Rectors Forum

In a significant step toward global academic partnership, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) recently took part in the BRICS Universities Rectors Forum in Moscow. This year’s forum, held from October 17-18, brought together university leaders from BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), as well as new members Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Representing RRU, Maj Gen Deepak Mehra (Retd.), the Director of the School of Internal Security and SMART Policing, expressed his pride in being part of a platform focused on academic cooperation, international dialogue, and research innovation.

Prestigious Host Institution

The forum took place at the renowned Lomonosov Moscow State University, one of Russia’s most iconic educational institutions, known for its historic architecture as one of the “Seven Sisters.” This grand setting added to the forum’s prestige, emphasizing the commitment of BRICS countries to fostering academic ties. In his opening remarks, Maj Gen Mehra conveyed RRU’s appreciation to the forum hosts and highlighted the symbolic timing, as the forum coincided with the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, held just days later.

Strengthening Academic and Strategic Partnerships Among BRICS Nations

Maj Gen Mehra highlighted the importance of this event as a foundation for lasting academic and strategic partnerships. Speaking on behalf of RRU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel noted that the gathering symbolizes a commitment to multilateral collaboration. “The forum not only showcases our shared interests but also underscores the vital role education plays in shaping a prosperous future for all BRICS nations,” he said. He welcomed the new member countries, expressing confidence that their inclusion would bring fresh perspectives and opportunities for cross-cultural learning.

BRICS as a Global Economic Force

During his address, Maj Gen Mehra underlined the increasing global influence of BRICS nations. Collectively, BRICS represents about 42% of the global population, 35% of the world’s GDP, and 40% of global trade. He emphasized that BRICS countries are quickly becoming a central force in the global economy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that by 2030, BRICS will account for over half of the world’s GDP, further elevating the importance of this alliance on the world stage. “BRICS countries are also strong advocates for fair global governance, which includes ensuring that emerging nations have a voice in important global matters,” he added.

RRU’s Alignment with India’s National Vision and NEP 2020

Representing India, Maj Gen Mehra highlighted RRU’s dedication to supporting India’s goals of creating a peaceful and cooperative global community. He explained that RRU is closely aligned with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which focuses on making the Indian education system inclusive, research-driven, and internationally competitive. RRU, an institution of national importance, continues to play a vital role in providing quality education that caters to national security needs and societal well-being.

Education for a Safe and Prosperous World

Maj Gen Mehra took the opportunity to showcase the innovative programs at RRU, which offers 11 specialized schools designed to meet both national and international security needs. He shared how RRU’s programs in cutting-edge research, security training, and international collaboration are equipping students with skills to tackle modern-day challenges in a complex global landscape. He highlighted RRU’s commitment to not just defense training but to fostering an understanding of global security through education.

Building Collaborative Ties Across BRICS

Maj Gen Mehra presented a vision of deeper collaboration among BRICS universities, advocating for initiatives such as student and faculty exchange programs, joint research, and projects that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He proposed that Gujarat’s International Fin-Tech City (GIFT) could be a key hub for BRICS universities to collaborate on transformative projects, including establishing campuses within India. “At RRU, we’re excited to strengthen bonds with our BRICS counterparts and create academic programs that can help tackle global issues,” he remarked.

Setting the Stage for Continued Academic Growth and Cooperation

In his closing remarks, Maj Gen Mehra shared his hope that the BRICS Universities Rectors Forum would mark the beginning of a new era of collaboration. He invited all forum participants to visit RRU in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, to explore avenues for future partnership and growth. “This forum is just the starting point for cooperation in education and research that could drive BRICS nations from developing economies to fully developed societies,” he noted.

The Future of BRICS Education Collaboration

With the conclusion of the BRICS Universities Rectors Forum, academic leaders returned home with a shared goal of building stronger educational and cultural ties. The forum’s discussions and proposals have laid the groundwork for a more integrated academic network, one that emphasizes sustainable development and mutual growth. As Maj Gen Mehra conveyed, these collaborations can not only strengthen the educational systems in each BRICS nation but also support a more inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous global society.
