IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer Powers Punjab Kings into IPL Final with an Unforgettable Knock!
Newz Daddy IPL Updates
This is a summary of the Punjab Kings’ historic victory over the Mumbai Indians in the second qualifying match.
This is the first time a side has ever chased down a target of 204 against the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians were the only IPL team that had not lost after hitting 200+ runs when batting first. On the other side, this was the 8th time in history that the Punjab Kings had successfully chased down a target of more than 200.
After hitting a winning sixer against in the second playoff, Shreyas Iyer showed no emotion, excitement or joy on his face. He was calm, composed and focused as he knew that the job was not yet done. The final hurdle is yet to be crossed against RCB on 3rd June at the same venue.
RCB, which had given a humiliating defeat to Punjab just a few days ago, that wound is yet to heal in the hearts of the Punjab players. Now they have a chance to take revenge and win their first maiden title of IPL.

Punjab Kings‘ 8 207/5 was the eighth time they had scored 200 or more runs in the 2025 Indian Premier League, and they shared the record with Gujarat Titans in the same tournament. The Birmingham Bears’ seven T20 Blast appearances in 2022 were the most recent.
The IPL 2025 Ahmedabad saw 11 occurrences of 200+ totals, the most at a single IPL site and the second-highest in any T20 competition after 12 in Rawalpindi during the PSL 2023.
The most sixes ever hit by a Punjab Kings batter in an IPL tournament is 39, which Shreyas Iyer smashed, more than Glenn Maxwell’s 36 in 2014—the last and only previous occasion the side advanced to the finals. The only Indian batter to hit more sixes in a single IPL season than Shreyas is Abhishek Sharma in 2024 (41).
After Shaun Marsh (2008) and KL Rahul (2018, 2020, and 2021), Shreyas Iyer is the third batter for the Punjab Kings to reach 603 runs in the IPL 2025. In addition, it is his most successful IPL season, surpassing his 519-run total from 2020, when he guided the Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final. After David Warner’s 93 for SRH against Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 2 in Delhi in 2016, his undefeated 87 is the second-highest knock by a captain in an IPL Playoffs or knockout.
Most runs in a season for a PBKS batter
Player | Season | Runs | Ave | SR | 100s/50s | HS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
KL Rahul | 2020 | 670 | 55.83 | 129.34 | 1/5 | 132* |
KL Rahul | 2018 | 659 | 54.91 | 158.41 | 0/6 | 95* |
KL Rahul | 2021 | 626 | 62.60 | 138.80 | 0/6 | 98* |
Shaun Marsh | 2008 | 616 | 68.44 | 139.68 | 1/5 | 115 |
Shreyas Iyer | 2025 | 603 | 54.81 | 175.80 | 0/6 | 97* |
The IPL 2025 edition saw the most sixes ever hit in a single edition. In the last four seasons, the record has changed hands: 1062 in 2022, 1124 in 2023, 1260 in 2024, and 1271 in 2025, with one game remaining.
The two teams in the final have not tasted the IPL trophy in the last 17 years. But Shreyas Iyer, as a captain, had a taste last year when he led KRR to lift the trophy. However, Virat Kohli is yet to win the IPL title under his belt as a player.
The final will be played on 3rd June at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, where we have seen the pitch as a batting paradise, and teams have been able to score more than 200 runs, and the chasing team has also been able to nail it down. It will be interesting to see which team shows more character, calmness and composure on the day that matters the most and lifts the trophy.
