Overcrowding near the Stadium After the IPL Finals led to a Stampede, killing 11. Government Announces ₹10 Lakh Compensation for the Families of the Deceased
On the Bengaluru stampede, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “Did the Karnataka government criticise the 50–60 people who died in the Kumbh Mela?”
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared after Wednesday’s stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy stadium that he would not use parallels to the Kumbh Mela or other such disasters to excuse the incident.
When multiple persons were killed in a stampede at the Mahakumbh, Siddaramaiah told the media that he did not condemn the incident.
“Such incidents occurred in numerous locations. I won’t defend this by pointing out that it happened here and there and comparing it to them. I didn’t criticise the 50–60 persons who perished at the Kumbh Mela,” he remarked.
“It is another matter entirely if Congress expresses criticism. Was it the Karnataka administration or I who voiced criticism? remarked CM Siddaramaiah.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated at a press conference that the government will also offer the injured free medical care.
“During the celebration of the triumph, a significant tragedy took place. It took place close to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has declared that the dead will receive ₹10 lakh in compensation. The injured will receive free medical care from the government,” the CM declared.
CM Siddaramaiah expressed his profound sadness over the incident, saying, “The rush claimed 11 lives and injured 33. It was not necessary for this tragedy to occur. The administration is deeply saddened by this tragedy.
The chief minister of Karnataka also claimed to have launched a magisterial investigation into the issue.
“This incident is not something I wish to defend. This will not be a political issue for our government. I’ve given 15 days and authorised a magisterial inquiry. Even the stadium’s gates were broken. A stampede was in progress. Such a large throng was not anticipated. Even though the stadium can only hold 35,000 people, two to three lakh people showed up, according to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Thousands of supporters flocked to the Bengaluru stadium to see their winning squad.
In Tuesday’s IPL 2025 finals at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six wickets, finally ending an 18-year drought for the prestigious IPL trophy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by the tragedy and called it “absolutely heartrending” on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister prayed for the quick recovery of those hurt and sent his condolences to the families of the departed in a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.
“The tragedy in Bengaluru is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with everyone who has lost a loved one during this terrible time. “I pray for a speedy recovery for those injured: PM Narendra Modi,” the PMO said on X. (ANI).
Although he was deeply saddened by the occurrence, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal remained adamant that the BCCI could not be held responsible.
It’s heartbreaking and depressing. The festivities descended into tragedy. We send our deepest sympathies to the families who lost a dear one. The IPL ended last night for the BCCI. How can we be held accountable for an incident like this when we were unaware that it was happening? India Today heard Dhumal’s words.
Additionally, he drew attention to the absence of IPL authorities at the occasion.
“How can something like this make us accountable? Our sincere condolences are extended for this unfortunate occurrence. However, we cannot be held responsible for something that was out of our control. I don’t know if the stampede happened right outside the stadium; I don’t know for sure. Have you observed any IPL authorities controlling the crowd or assisting the players’ admittance at the gate? Dhumal was asked.
