Kabaddi meets hockey: the Indian Men’s Hockey Team and the Gujarat Giants of the PKL team meet for a unique crossover in Bengaluru
The Gujarat Giants, owned by Adani Sportsline, had a special meeting with the Indian Men’s Hockey Team at the SAI Centre in Bengaluru as part of their preseason preparations for Pro Kabaddi League Season 12.
Gujarat Giants players, Himanshu Jaglan, Rakesh, Parteek Dahiya, Nitin Panwar and V Ajith Kumar, along with the Head Coach Jaivir Sharma, Assistant Coach Varinder Singh Sandhu and Fitness Trainer Abhishek Parihar, drew inspiration from the Indian Team Hockey team and even tried their hand at hockey, while the hockey players experienced kabaddi drills in return.
Players and coaches talked about the similar physical and tactical requirements of kabaddi and hockey, such as strength, speed, agility, and tactical awareness, in a cross-learning exercise. Additionally, the teams shared knowledge about injury prevention, strength and conditioning, and how training techniques from one discipline might improve performance in another.
To the delight of all, Craig Fulton, the chief coach, and Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian Men’s Hockey Team, even attempted raiding. After a rigorous training session on the grass, the hockey squad relished the challenge of a new sport during the lively and entertaining interchange, which was full of banter, camaraderie, and smiles for both teams.
The Gujarat Giants are getting ready for the 2018 PKL season, while the Indian Men’s Hockey Team is getting ready for their tour of Australia and the Asia Cup. As a sign of respect for one another, the session ended with a jersey swap.
The Gujarat Giants will kick off their PKL campaign on August 30 in Vizag against U Mumba. The Gujarat Giants are currently training at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru.
