Critical Review: “Kundalu ”
“Kundalu” (meaning “circle” in Gujarati) is a beautiful story about village life in North Gujarat, where marriage is seen as the most important part of social life.
The story is about Mangu, an orphan girl from a poor family, and Vikas, a carefree young farmer who has a speech problem. Mangu gets a marriage proposal from Vikas, but the speech problem of Vikas becomes a barrier to their marriage.
Both move ahead in life, bound by traditions and customs. Between loneliness and the wish to find something more in life, their paths meet again.
Will they find themselves and each other?
This drama and slice-of-life film, made in the Mahesani dialect, was shot in the lovely villages of the Mehsana district of North Gujarat.
Performance of the Cast
Swayam Gadhvi is the main character played as Vikas and has made an impressive debut in the Gujarati film industry. He is looking very natural actor and has done justice to his character.
Sonali Lele Desai is a renowned actor in the Gujarati film industry. I have seen many films of hers, but have never seen her in this type of role. She has played a widowed lady of the village. I will not say anything about her acting, as she is exceptional as always in all her roles.
The rest of the actor have also played their part very well in the film.
Positive Points
- The story is quite different then the contemporary content that is coming in Gujarati films these days.
- The writing and dialogue are excellent.
- Nice direction of Rohit Prajapati, taking out good work from an established actress (Sonali Lele Desai) and debutants.
- All the actors have performed exceptionally well in this movie.
- No profanity or abusive language. A complete family entertainer movie.
Negative Points
- The age gap between Mangu (Sonali Lele Desai) and Vikas (Swayam) in the movie is not syncing. Both Mangu and Vikas were supposed to get married, but later on in the movie, “Mangu” looks quite older compared to Vikas…!!
- Vikas played a character of a dumb person; there are quite a few monologues of his which is hard to understand what he is willing to say, you have to guess what he might be saying.
- The length of the movie, I felt, was a bit long; it could have been 15 minutes shorter.
- DOP and editing could have been better; a few shots are extremely close, which I felt was not necessary. The editing is also not up to the mark.
Final Thoughts
Kundalu is a special movie that resonates with every man/woman who is specially-abled. The pain they feel during their life is shown very nicely in this movie.
