Lakshadweep remains peaceful and crime-free, with a growing potential for maritime tourism.
In a major step towards making India’s coastal regions safer and stronger, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lakshadweep Police. This partnership will help boost law enforcement, training, and research in the beautiful island territory of Lakshadweep.
The signing ceremony was held on 22nd March 2025 in the presence of Shri Praful Patel, the Administrator of Lakshadweep, and Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, the Vice Chancellor of RRU. Senior police officers, including the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Lakshadweep, also attended the event.
This collaboration marks a new beginning for the law enforcement agencies in Lakshadweep. RRU and Lakshadweep Police will work on specialized training programs, develop modern policing techniques, and focus on research-driven solutions. One of the most important outcomes of this MoU is the setting up of a dedicated center called the ‘RRU & Lakshadweep Coastal & Island Security Centre’ (LCISC). This center will work exclusively on coastal security, island policing, and emergency response systems.
Lakshadweep is India’s smallest Union Territory, known for its calm atmosphere and low crime rate. However, its location in the Arabian Sea makes it strategically important for maritime security. This MoU aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘SAGAR’—Security and Growth for All in the Region—which focuses on safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
The partnership will not only improve security but also support the development of maritime tourism in Lakshadweep. The islands are famous for their breathtaking natural beauty, clean beaches, and water sports like scuba diving. The growing tourism potential needs specialized policing to ensure the safety of tourists and locals alike.
During the event, Shri Praful Patel emphasized that this collaboration will help create a strong system to prevent crime and maintain peace. He highlighted that with RRU’s expertise, local youth can be trained to serve in the police and security forces while upholding the highest moral and ethical standards. This move will also generate employment opportunities for the local population.
The Lakshadweep Police officials expressed their excitement about this partnership. They are looking forward to gaining knowledge through advanced educational courses, technology-driven training, and research programs. These initiatives will help police personnel learn new-age policing techniques like surveillance systems, cybercrime handling, disaster management, and crisis response.
The setting up of the LCISC is expected to be a game-changer. It will serve as a hub for research, innovation, and training tailored to coastal and island security challenges. From patrolling the vast sea areas to handling emergencies like natural disasters, the police force will be better equipped and prepared.
This initiative also focuses on promoting a safe environment for tourists. Maritime tourism, especially adventure activities like scuba diving, has a huge potential in Lakshadweep. Ensuring the safety and security of tourists is crucial for the growth of this sector, which can contribute significantly to the local economy.
The MoU strengthens the belief that education and training are the most powerful tools for effective policing. It also shows the government’s commitment to empowering remote regions like Lakshadweep by providing them with the latest knowledge, skills, and technology.
In conclusion, this partnership between RRU and Lakshadweep Police is a timely move to safeguard India’s coastal borders, promote safe tourism, and build a capable and modern police force in the islands. It is a step towards creating a secure and prosperous future for Lakshadweep and contributing to India’s maritime security.
