I watched the film Maa Behen on Netflix. It stars Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri, along with Dharna Durga. Ravi Kishan and Geetanjali Kulkarni (from Gullak) are in supporting roles. This is a dark comedy suspense thriller. It is not very long, just about two hours, so it finishes quickly. But does Madhuri manage to create magic alongside Triptii? Let us talk about it.

Look, there is a house. In the house live a mother and her two daughters, and in that very same house lies a dead body. Now, how did that body get there? Did one of them kill him, or is it something else? Something that was hidden very cleverly in the teaser and trailer. Well, you will have to watch the film to find out.

In my opinion, this is a dark comedy but also a smart comedy. It does not just show or tell you the same scene over and over again like a lesson. Not like in the film Drishyam, you know, the 2nd of October, Panaji, and the food. It is not quite like that here. But because this is a dark comedy, everything moves along with a funny chemistry.

If we talk about the best acting, it has to be Triptii. Once you forget her previous famous roles, the way she has acted here makes you a true fan of hers. I am talking about her acting skills.

The “Maa Behen” film is two hours long, and it keeps you glued to your seat, but mostly in the second half. The first half of the Maa Behen film felt a bit flat to me. It leaves a few questions in your mind while the story is being built. But in the end, when the story opens up… as I said, this is a dark comedy and a smart comedy too. So at the very end, when the secret of the murder day is revealed, it feels satisfying. Actually, the film does not shock you, but it does a decent job.

There are no laugh-out-loud moments where you will hold your stomach and laugh. It uses a bit of satirical comedy instead. For example, the neighbourhood where all these things happen is called ‘Adarsh Colony’ (Ideal Colony). The mother and daughters are named Rekha, Jaya, and Sushma. If you know the famous Indian washing powder advertisement, you will get the joke. You have to listen to all the satire very carefully and connect the dots. You might even have to think twice and say, “Oh, I should probably laugh at this.”

The style of filmmaking is very simple and subtle. Do not expect highly creative cinematography like in Haseen Dillruba or Darlings. Those two films belong to the same genre, but this one is made in a much simpler way, yet it is still engaging. All three leading ladies have carried the film beautifully on their shoulders.

There are no songs in the film, and there is no romance either in Maa Behen. There is no bad language or vulgarity. Still, there are a few things that might make you feel a bit uncomfortable in front of your family, so keep that in mind before watching. Also, there is a surprise appearance by an actor, I think a little while after the first half, and that was a nice surprise.

Overall, I can say it is a decent, good film. So, from my side, it gets a comfortable three out of five stars. If you have watched the film, do let me know in the comments.
