Bhooli si surat, aankhon mein masti, but this time, the familiar smile hides something far more unsettling. Ever since the trailer of Mrs Deshpande dropped, it has sparked a strong conversation for presenting Madhuri Dixit in one of the boldest and darkest roles of her career. Known for grace, charm, and elegance, Madhuri’s transformation into a cold and complex character has surprised audiences and critics alike. The shift from her iconic image to a raw, de-glam look signals a powerful creative risk.
The six-episode psychological thriller, produced by Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies, premieres on JioHotstar on December 19, 2025. The series marks a sharp turn into darker storytelling for mainstream Indian streaming content. Madhuri plays a serial killer whose ordinary life is carefully designed to hide disturbing truths. This contrast between appearance and reality sits at the heart of the show’s tension.
To sharpen the premise, the synopsis reveals that a series of fresh murders begins to follow the pattern of an older, infamous case. As fear spreads, investigators trace clues back to Mrs Deshpande herself, raising the chilling idea that the “copycat killer” may actually be the original criminal hiding in plain sight. This psychological cat-and-mouse approach reflects a growing appetite among Indian viewers for layered crime stories that focus more on the human mind than surface-level shocks.
With every character carrying hidden motives and silent wounds, the supporting cast plays a key role in deepening the mystery. For Priyanshu Chatterjee, Mrs Deshpande offered a chance to explore a world where silence can speak louder than dialogue. His character moves through morally grey spaces, adding tension through restraint rather than overt action. Such performances are vital in thrillers that rely on mood and psychological pressure.

Priyanshu credits much of his performance to director Nagesh Kukunoor’s working style. “Nagesh Sir gives a lot of room to play, aided with ample guidance about the subject and character,” he says. Known for sensitive storytelling and strong character work, Kukunoor is recognised for creating a safe space for actors to explore emotional depth. His calm temperament and clear vision help performers push their limits without losing control of the narrative tone.
The actor adds that the director’s guidance focused on physical movement and tonal balance, which are especially important in thrillers where small gestures can reveal inner conflict. Such direction helps ensure that performances remain believable and grounded, even as the story ventures into dark psychological territory.
Working on a project of this scale also meant close collaboration with the streaming platform behind it. Speaking about the experience, Priyanshu says his journey with Applause Entertainment and JioHotstar was both fulfilling and supportive. He highlights the importance of mentorship and teamwork in long-format storytelling, where consistency across episodes is key to maintaining tension and audience interest.
Adapted from the acclaimed French thriller La Mante, the series carries global storytelling roots while being reshaped for Indian sensibilities. Indian adaptations of international formats have gained popularity when they balance local emotion with universal themes. Mrs Deshpande explores identity, buried trauma, and the cost of confronting one’s past, themes that resonate strongly across cultures.
Alongside Madhuri Dixit and Priyanshu Chatterjee, the series stars Siddharth Chandekar and a strong ensemble cast. Their combined performances help build a slow-burning atmosphere where trust is fragile and danger feels close. Produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Kukunoor Movies, the show reflects the growing maturity of Indian OTT content.
With its unsettling premise, powerful performances, and psychological depth, Mrs Deshpande is positioned to become one of JioHotstar’s most talked-about year-end releases, challenging viewers to look beyond appearances and question where darkness truly hides.
