A Copycat on the Loose. A Killer Behind Bars. Only One Knows the Truth — Trailer out for JioHotstar’s Mrs Deshpande, premiering December 19th

Produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Kukunoor Movies, and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, Mrs Deshpande marks Madhuri Dixit’s most raw, deglam, and quietly powerful avatar yet.

Mrs Deshpande shocks with a fearless, dark journey

The trailer of Mrs Deshpande has been released, and it brings back Madhuri Dixit in a way audiences have never seen. While she is known for her bright smile and graceful screen charm, this time her calm face hides something darker. Many psychological thrillers use soft expressions to build fear, and this series follows that craft. The idea of a dangerous silence around an everyday woman is a classic theme seen in many European thrillers, which is why the story connects smoothly with viewers who enjoy tense and slow-building mysteries.

JioHotstar shared the gripping trailer of the 6-episode series, which arrives on 19 December. As the year ends, streaming platforms usually push their strongest titles, and this show seems positioned for that. JioHotstar has been shaping its premium crime category for months, and bringing Madhuri Dixit into a dark thriller fits that strategy. Her character’s stillness, quiet voice, and sharp mind create a mood that matches the show’s emotional weight.

Set in Mumbai, the story explores a city shaken by murders that look similar to those done by a serial killer who is already in prison. Crime experts often say that copycat killers study older cases and repeat them, which is why police in real life sometimes revisit older files when new crimes appear. In the show, the police are forced to seek help from the real killer, a simple woman with a face that reveals nothing. This makes the series tap into a strong psychological angle: how much can you trust someone who hides every emotion?

As buried pasts and small lies come out, the series builds tension through tiny moments rather than loud scenes. Many modern thrillers use quiet storytelling to make the fear stronger, and Mrs Deshpande follows that path. The plot also reminds audiences of the French thriller La Mante, from which this series is adapted. The original story was praised for its slow pace, strong mother-son conflict, and chilling cat-and-mouse tension.

Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, the show features Siddharth Chandekar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, and a strong ensemble cast. With Kukunoor’s experience in character-driven stories, this crime drama aims to focus more on emotions than shock value. Producers Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies have worked earlier on stories that blend human behaviour with smart writing, and this show seems to follow the same method.

Madhuri Dixit says the character allowed her to explore a quiet but intense power. She explains that every look and pause holds meaning, which is a known technique in psychological acting. Many great thriller performances come from small eye movements and soft dialogue rather than big emotional scenes. Her choice to step into such a role marks a shift from her usual glamorous screen presence, showing her range as a performer.

Director Nagesh Kukunoor shares that he wanted to build a grey hero—someone the audience should fear but also feel curious about. Anti-heroes and morally grey characters have become very popular in global streaming, and this show adds an Indian voice to that trend.

Alok Jain from JioHotstar says the platform wanted bold and emotionally truthful storytelling. Over the last year, JioHotstar has invested heavily in crime dramas because the audience for such content has grown in India, especially after international psychological thrillers gained success. This series also adds to their aim of creating strong female-led crime stories, something that is becoming a major trend worldwide.

Sameer Nair from Applause Entertainment adds that their partnership with JioHotstar has created strong crime franchises like Criminal Justice and Search: The Naina Murder Case. Together, they want to bring high-quality content that balances scale with deep emotions. With Mrs Deshpande, they hope to surprise viewers with something sharp, dark, and emotionally deep.
