National Road Safety Month 2026 Begins with RRU Action

Rashtriya Raksha University, the Inaugural of Road Safety Awareness Activity to mark National Road Safety Month 2026.

Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), Gandhinagar, inaugurated the observance of National Road Safety Month in collaboration with Gujarat Road Safety Authority-Gandhinagar with a comprehensive awareness programme designed to instil responsible road behaviour among its students, faculty, and staff. The initiative reflects the university’s broader mission of nurturing socially conscious citizens and security professionals who contribute meaningfully to public safety and nation-building. Across India, road accidents remain one of the leading causes of death among young people, which makes such campus-level programmes important. Universities play a key role because students often influence families and peers, helping safety messages travel beyond classrooms and into daily life.

The event was graced by eminent dignitaries, including Shri S. A. Patel, Commissioner of Gujarat Road Safety Authority; Shri Bhawani Sinh Rathore, Director of SISSP; Shri U. K. Patel, Regional Enforcement Officer; and Shri D. B. Patel, RTO Inspector, Gandhinagar. Their collective presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between academic institutions and enforcement agencies in promoting road safety. In many states, coordination between traffic authorities and educational institutions has been shown to improve awareness and compliance, especially among first-time drivers who may not fully understand traffic laws or risks.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Shri Bhawani Sinh Rathore, who emphasised the university’s commitment to cultivating awareness and responsibility among young citizens. He highlighted that road safety is not merely a matter of compliance but a civic duty that reflects respect for life and community welfare. This approach aligns with global road safety thinking, which stresses that safe roads depend as much on human behaviour as on infrastructure. Simple actions such as patience, courtesy, and alertness can prevent many accidents before they happen.

In his inaugural address, Shri S. A. Patel stressed the urgent need for preventive approaches to road accidents, pointing out that enforcement alone cannot achieve lasting change without education and behavioural transformation. He urged students to adopt safe practices, such as wearing helmets and seatbelts, avoiding mobile phone usage while driving, and respecting traffic signals. Studies by road safety bodies have consistently shown that helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by a large margin, while seatbelts significantly lower the chances of death in a crash. His remarks particularly focused on youth, who represent both the most vulnerable group in road accidents and the most influential agents of change, as habits formed early often last a lifetime.

To make the programme interactive, a Road Safety Quiz Competition was organised. This activity not only tested participants’ knowledge of traffic rules and safety measures but also engagingly reinforcing key principles. Interactive learning methods like quizzes are known to improve memory and understanding, especially among younger audiences. Winners of the quiz were awarded helmets, symbolising the practical importance of protective gear and reinforcing the message that safety begins with individual responsibility. Such incentives also help turn awareness into action by encouraging real-life use of safety equipment.

An experience-sharing session followed, where students recounted personal observations and challenges related to road safety. These narratives added a relatable dimension to the event, bridging theoretical knowledge with lived experiences. When students share stories about near-misses, unsafe roads, or careless driving they have witnessed, it helps others see how common these risks are. Personal stories often make safety messages more powerful than rules alone, as they touch emotions and promote empathy.

The programme concluded with the Road Safety Pledge, taken collectively by the university community. This symbolic gesture reaffirmed their commitment to responsible road conduct and to spreading awareness beyond the campus. Public pledges have been used widely in safety campaigns because they create a sense of shared duty and moral responsibility. When taken together, they also strengthen community bonds and encourage people to hold each other accountable.

By launching National Road Safety Month with such a meaningful initiative, Rashtriya Raksha University has once again demonstrated its dedication to public safety, community engagement, and holistic education. The event not only marked the beginning of a month-long campaign but also set the tone for sustained advocacy and behavioural change in the realm of road safety. Continuous reminders, discussions, and activities over a month help reinforce messages that might otherwise fade quickly.

Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) is India’s pioneering institution for education, research, and training in the fields of national security, internal security, and law enforcement. Established by an Act of Parliament under the Ministry of Home Affairs, RRU is committed to strengthening India’s internal security architecture through world-class education, research, and capacity-building initiatives. Its involvement in road safety reflects the understanding that public safety is a broad concept that includes everyday risks faced by citizens.

The School of Internal Security and SMART Policing (SISSP) embodies the principles of Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, and Techno-savvy and Trained policing. Through its academic and training programmes, the school prepares law enforcement leaders to meet the challenges of modern policing and public safety in an increasingly interconnected world, where traffic management and road discipline are critical to urban order.

The Centre of Traffic Management and Road Safety (CTMRS) at Rashtriya Raksha University serves as a dedicated hub for research, training, and policy advocacy in the areas of road safety, traffic regulation, and innovative mobility systems. The Centre aims to enhance national and global capacity through applied research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and advanced training in traffic law enforcement. This initiative underscores RRU’s vision of making meaningful contributions to public safety, responsible mobility, and international understanding, while reminding citizens that safer roads begin with informed and responsible individuals.
