Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Launched in India at ₹16.99 Lakh, Claims 29 km/l Mileage

Renault India has introduced its Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 powertrain with the new Renault Duster, bringing a self-charging hybrid SUV to the Indian market at an introductory price of ₹16.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The model combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. Renault claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 km/l, with the ability to complete up to 80% of city driving in pure electric mode.

Announced in Mumbai on 17 October 2026, the new Duster is the first Renault vehicle in India to use the company’s E-Tech strong hybrid system. It will be sold in Evolution, Techno and Emotion variants, with prices reaching ₹19.49 lakh for the top-spec Emotion version.

The launch puts Renault in a position to attract SUV buyers who want lower fuel use without depending on public charging stations. The hybrid system charges its battery while the vehicle is moving or slowing down, so owners do not need to plug it into an external charger.

The powertrain uses a four-cylinder, 1.8-litre petrol engine with Atkinson-cycle combustion technology and a 350-bar direct fuel injection system. Renault says the combined system produces 160 PS, while peak motor torque stands at 208 Nm. The company quotes a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 9.61 seconds and a driving range of more than 1,400 km.

A key part of the system is its multi-mode automatic gearbox, which has two electric gears and four petrol-engine gears. Renault says these create 15 possible drive combinations, allowing the car to switch between different power sources according to driving conditions. The system has six operating modes, including electric-only driving, petrol-only operation, hybrid power and energy recovery.

The traction motor drives the wheels during electric operation. A second motor, known as the starter-generator, helps synchronise gear changes and manage energy. During braking and deceleration, the system recovers some of the vehicle’s movement energy and stores it in the battery.

Drivers can also select B Mode to increase regenerative braking when they lift their foot off the accelerator. An E-Save function helps preserve battery energy for later use. The battery uses a dedicated refrigerant cooling system and comes with an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty, according to Renault.

Renault’s main claim is that the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 can deliver 29 km/l under the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) certification test. The company also says the vehicle can cover up to 80% of city driving in electric mode, with fuel savings of up to 29% compared with diesel.

Its supporting figures include up to 52% better mileage than diesel in city driving and 40% lower carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre. These are manufacturer claims, and actual results will depend on traffic, driving habits and road conditions. Buyers should also compare the cost of petrol, diesel and maintenance in their own area before deciding which powertrain suits them.

India’s passenger vehicle market has shown growing interest in alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel engines. Reuters reported in July 2026 that hybrids accounted for 8.3% of passenger vehicle retail sales in June, while electric vehicles made up 7.8%. The figures indicate growing demand for different types of powertrains, although CNG vehicles held a larger share.

India’s revised Corporate Average Fuel Economy norms, notified on 30 September 2026, are due to take effect on 1 April 2027 and run until March 2032. The rules seek an improvement of about 16.7% in fuel-consumption benchmarks over five years. Fuel-efficient vehicles are therefore likely to remain an important area of development for carmakers.

Stéphane Deblaise, Chief Executive Officer of Renault Group India, said the company had sold more than one million E-Tech strong hybrid vehicles worldwide since 2020.

“With more than one million E-Tech strong hybrid vehicles sold worldwide since 2020, the E-Tech strong hybrid is a proven Renault powertrain technology. Now, we are bringing it to India as part of our futuREady India roadmap. Our approach is to bring to the Indian customers the best of Renault’s global technologies, while developing cars, powertrains and features specifically for Indian needs through our engineering and design centres in Chennai, our biggest outside Europe. The Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is a clear example of this approach.”

Renault Group’s E-Tech programme draws on more than a decade of work in electric mobility and experience gained through Formula 1. Renault’s published technical material describes the system as protected by more than 150 patents, while the Indian launch material refers to more than 200 patents.

The new Duster also receives frequency-dependent damping for ride comfort, battery thermal management and an illuminated DUSTER grille logo. The Emotion variant has dune-brown leatherette upholstery, ventilated front seats and six-way power adjustment. The Techno variant gets desert-beige semi-leatherette upholstery, while a revised headrest design aims to make the cabin feel more spacious.

The three variants are priced as follows:

Variant Ex-showroom price
Evolution Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 ₹16.99 lakh
Techno Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 ₹18.99 lakh
Emotion Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 ₹19.49 lakh

Bookings are open through authorised Renault dealerships across India and the company’s official website.

Renault has also introduced its Forever Protect 360 ownership package, starting at ₹89,900. It includes three years of zero-depreciation motor insurance, a three-year or 30,000 km annual maintenance contract, and an assured resale value of 60% after three years. Financing is available through Renault Finance partners.

Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Renault Group India, said, “In the Duster segment, nearly half of all diesel vehicles are sold in the ₹17–20 lakh price band, and that rises to more than 90% for diesel automatics. That is exactly where the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 comes in. Starting at ₹16.99 lakh, right at the heart of this market, we believe it is the smarter choice for customers considering diesel, combining significantly lower fuel consumption with a quieter, smoother and more sophisticated driving experience, without requiring customers to change how or where they drive.”

Renault India operates a manufacturing plant at Oragadam near Chennai, with an annual capacity of 480,000 vehicles. The company reports close to 638 sales and service touchpoints nationwide, including more than 200 Workshop on Wheels locations.

For buyers, the key question will be whether the hybrid’s fuel savings justify its purchase price. Real-world mileage, long-term maintenance costs and the difference between hybrid and diesel running expenses will help determine how attractive the new Duster proves to be.
