O’Romeo Movie Review:
I watched Shahid Kapoor’s much-awaited film O’Romeo. There are some films you just watch, and some you actually feel. In this film, the way everything is shown brings many different feelings in front of you: love, debt, revenge, anger, brutality, emotional attachment, guilt, and pride. If you look at it deeply, you will find many more emotions, too. But apart from that, how was my experience in the cinema hall? Let us talk about that.

There is a contract killer named Ustara. He has a gang as well. Together, they take contracts to kill different people and finish the job. One day, Triptii Dimri’s character Afshan suddenly comes to him. She gives him a contract to kill someone. Why does she do that? What is her backstory? What role does Nana Patekar play in all this? For that, you will have to watch the film. But I want to praise the director, Vishal Bhardwaj. The way he balances mass entertainment with absolutely classy storytelling is genius.
There is bloodshed, fighting, and then conversations. Then again, bloodshed, beating, and conversations. In between, there is a classy song to hook the audience. Then the back story, then bloodshed again, then more conversations. This cycle continues. Between all this, love, romance, comedy, and revenge also keep going on. The director has kept a very good balance between all these, which was actually fun to watch on the big screen.
And in this, Triptii Dimri really stands out. We may have seen her earlier as “bhabhi 2”, but in this film, the strong and emotional role she has, and the way she plays her character, is totally raw and without makeup. I can say she is really beautiful. As we are talking about Triptii, did you notice something? In O’Romeo and the posters, Triptii Dimri and the makers have changed the spelling of her name to add a second “i”.
The film is 3 hours long. Yes, 3 hours does feel a bit long for films these days. Here, too, I felt they could have cut 15–20 minutes. But then I remembered, it is a Vishal Bhardwaj film, and he is known for slow-burning films. Omkara and Haider are examples of that slow burn, and they are classic films. First of all, hats off to Sajid Nadiadwala. We know he has a very good track record, and he has given us content-driven gems like Highway, Tamasha, and Chhichhore. And with O’Romeo, he has done it again. He has mounted this real-event-inspired story on such a grand scale that it is a joy just to watch the visuals in the cinema hall. It is rich, it is lavish, and it shows that when the vision is strong, cinema magic is bound to happen.
Now, let us come to the performances, because here everyone has set the screen on fire. Shahid Kapoor as Ustara – this man is on another level. As Ustara, he is, what do you say in English? Ferocious and even unpredictable. The intensity in his eyes will keep you on the edge of your seat. I can say this is one of his best works. I wanted this man to have a proper comeback, and the way he has done it in this film is top class.
Triptii Dimri as Afshan is the soul of this film. She looks so innocent, but for love, she can also be so fierce. She has shown both emotions together. Shahid and Triptii have come together for the first time, but it feels like they belong together. Their chemistry is so organic and heartfelt that you connect with them. I want to give a special mention to Avinash Tiwary as Jalal. He was almost unrecognisable. By the way, Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah, Vikrant Massey, and Disha Patani all have only extended cameo roles. Nana Patekar has a slightly bigger role than them. But whenever he appears on screen, it is a lot of fun. His witty one-liners will definitely make you laugh.
The music of the film is also by Vishal Bhardwaj, and I can say it is decent. Visually, the film takes you straight back to the 90s. Those old buildings, raw waistcoats and jeans look, and Triptii’s suits. They have even put Disha Patani in a salwar suit – what bigger thing can there be than that?
Overall, O’Romeo is a kind of complete package. The action is stylish. The humour is organic. There are no forced jokes. If the screenplay had been a bit tighter, the story would have been more gripping, and the fun would have increased four times. This film is not just entertainment; it is an experience. Sajid Nadiadwala and Vishal Bhardwaj together have given the audience a surprise package.
But, but, but – there is a lot of violence in the film. The hardcore swear words are muted, but the “choo” words and many such words are kept as they are. There is no open vulgarity, but in one scene, there are literally moaning sounds. So I guess you will enjoy this film nicely with friends. But with family, be a bit careful, and keep children away from it. For me, the film definitely brings a strong entertainment factor, and because of that, overall I give O’Romeo 3.5 stars. The climax could have been a bit better
Newz Daddy’s Rating: I give this movie 3.5 stars out of 5.
