Prime Volleyball League Heads to Ahmedabad for Fifth Season

Prime Volleyball League Season 5 to Begin in Ahmedabad on November 30

The fifth edition will bring all 10 teams to the city for a month-long competition, with the Ahmedabad Defenders playing on home ground. The move comes after the league received recognition from the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) as India’s first division professional volleyball league in July 2026.

India’s men’s team also had a strong year. It won its first bronze medal at the 2026 AVC Men’s Volleyball Cup, held in Ahmedabad, and rose from 60th to 42nd in the world rankings, according to India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The city will host the matches at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, starting on November 30. The competition is expected to run for about a month, bringing Indian and overseas players together in a league that has moved between cities since its launch.

For Ahmedabad, the event comes at a time when the city is preparing for more large sporting events. Gujarat has been linked with preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, while Ahmedabad has also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. Hosting a national professional league gives local fans a chance to watch top-level volleyball and gives the city another event to add to its sporting calendar.

The Prime Volleyball League has used a different host city each season to reach new audiences. Its fifth season in Ahmedabad will put the sport before fans in Gujarat, where cricket remains the main draw for many sports followers. Volleyball has a strong base in several parts of India, but professional competitions still need wider public support, regular media coverage and more local players entering the sport.

The league’s move to Ahmedabad also follows a period of progress for Indian volleyball. In July, the FIVB recognised PVL as India’s first division professional volleyball league. The recognition allows clubs in the league to take part in international competitions organised by the Central Asian Volleyball Association, the Asian Volleyball Confederation and the FIVB, subject to their rules and qualification standards.

This gives the league a formal place in the international volleyball structure. It could also help Indian clubs gain experience against teams from other countries, though their participation will depend on the relevant competition rules.

India’s men’s national team had a strong year in 2026. The team won its first-ever bronze medal at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Cup, held in Ahmedabad, and moved from World No. 60 to World No. 42 in the FIVB rankings. The medal was a major result for Indian volleyball and added to the attention around the sport.

The Prime Volleyball League’s fifth season will feature 10 teams: Ahmedabad Defenders, Bengaluru Torpedoes, Calicut Heroes, Chennai Blitz, Delhi Toofans, Goa Guardians, Kochi Blue Spikers, Kolkata Thunderbolts, Mumbai Meteors and Telugu Black Hawks. They will compete for the league trophy, with the Ahmedabad Defenders playing in front of their home crowd.

Joy Bhattacharjya, CEO of Prime Volleyball League, said, “Taking Season 5 to Ahmedabad is another important step in our journey to grow professional volleyball across India. We have consciously taken the league to different cities each season to reach new audiences and strengthen the sport’s footprint. With Ahmedabad’s growing sporting ambitions and the progress of the Indian men’s national team, we believe this is an exciting time to bring PVL to this city.”

Pravin Chaudhari, owner of Ahmedabad Defenders, said, “We are immensely proud to welcome the Prime Volleyball League to Ahmedabad. As the city prepares to host major international sporting events and continues developing world-class infrastructure, hosting PVL at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex is another exciting opportunity to showcase its sporting capabilities. We look forward to welcoming teams and fans from across the country.”

Tuhin Mishra, MD and Co-Founder of Baseline Ventures and Director of Prime Volleyball League, said, “With FIVB recognition and the Indian men’s national team making significant progress internationally, there is tremendous momentum around volleyball in India. Our focus remains on strengthening the professional ecosystem, creating opportunities for Indian talent and expanding the sport’s reach. Ahmedabad is an exciting addition to that journey.”

For the league, the Ahmedabad season will be a test of how well professional volleyball can draw fans in a new market. For the city, it adds another sporting event as it works towards hosting bigger competitions in the coming years. The matches will also allow local fans to see the country’s leading players and international talent in action.

The season begins on November 30, 2026, at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura.
