R Praggnanandhaa defeats Vidit Gujrathi in the Tata Steel Masters chess tournament, while Magnus Carlsen maintains his lead.

In a long 10th round match at the Tata Steel Masters chess tournament, young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeated compatriot Vidit Santhosh Gujrathi. Late on Wednesday, the 16-year-old Praggnanandhaa (Elo 2612) ended a three-match losing trend by defeating the higher-rated Gujrathi (Elo 2727) in a Nimzo-Indian Classical variation game in 78 moves.

Gujrathi, who was near the top until around two rounds ago, is now tied for fourth place with 5.5 points. Praggnanandhaa, on the other hand, increased his score to 3.5 points but remained in 13th place. With all of the players in the top group drawing their games in round 10, world number one Magnus Carlsen maintained his lead with seven points.

The game between Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin was one of the shortest in the tournament this year, lasting only 16 moves. Anish Giri of the Netherlands drew Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland to go into the second position with 6.5 points.

Richard Rapport defeated Fabiano Caruana, Andrey Esipenko defeated Jorden Van Foreest, and Sweden’s Nils Grandelius defeated Daniil Dubov to win his first tournament.

With a draw versus Polina Shuvalova in the Challengers event, Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi retained his two-point lead over the field (Russia). His nearest opponents, Thai Dai Van Nguyen and Jonas Buhl Bjerre, both have 6.5 points.
In both the Masters and the Open, three more rounds must be completed.

After Round 10, these are the standings:

Magnus Carlsen (7 points), Anish Giri (6.5 points), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (3.5 points), and Richard Rapport (3.5 points).
