Plot:

“Dukaan” explores the realm of surrogacy, showing a narrative around Jasmine, a woman portrayed by Monika Panwar, who works on a courageous journey as a surrogate mother. Set against the backdrop of Gujarat, the film dives deep into themes of dignity, freedom of choice, and women’s autonomy in commercial surrogacy. The movie captures the essence of human resilience amidst life’s toughest decisions. ‘Dukaan’ is a testament to the power of love and sacrifice.”

Storyline:

The storyline of “Dukaan” is both feelings of sadness and thought-provoking. It sheds light on a subject rarely explored in Hindi cinema and manages to strike a delicate balance between emotional depth and societal commentary. The narrative follows Jasmine’s journey with sensitivity, offering viewers a glimpse into the complexities surrounding surrogacy. A tale of a surrogate mother and a desperate couple to become parents, it also involves the role of a doctor who holds a very significant position in the story of the movie. 

Acting:

The ensemble cast of “Dukaan” delivers commendable performances, with Monika Panwar shining in the lead role. Each actor brings a unique flair to their character, adding layers of authenticity to the narrative. Sikandar Kher, Soham Majumdar, Monali Thakur, and Vrajesh Hirjee leave a lasting impression with their portrayal of diverse characters.

Direction:

After giving successful films as story, screenplay, dialogue, and lyrics writers in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,  Brothers, Bajirao Mastani, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Raabta, Padmaavat, Batti Gul Meter Chalu, Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, Kabir Singh, Jabariya Jodi, Velle and Animal.  

Siddharth and Garima have now decided to try their hands in the direction of the movie. Directing duo Siddharth and Garima make a promising debut with “Dukaan.” Their vision for the film is evident in every frame, as they navigate through sensitive themes with finesse. The directors handle the subject matter with maturity, allowing the story to unfold organically while keeping the audience engaged throughout.

During the movie, I never felt that this was the directional debut of Sidhhart-Garima, impressive.

Cinematography:

The cinematography of “Dukaan” captures the essence of Gujarat beautifully, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the film. From sweeping landscapes to intimate moments, each frame is meticulously crafted, adding depth to the storytelling. The camera angles especially the shots of the stepwell are awesome.  

Screenplay:

Siddharth Singh’s screenplay is the backbone of “Dukaan,” weaving together various narratives seamlessly. The pacing is well-balanced, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in the storyline. The dialogues are heart-touching and thought-provoking, adding depth to the characters’ interactions.

Positive Points:

1. The thought-provoking storyline explores the complexities of surrogacy.
2. Compelling performances by the ensemble cast, particularly Monika Panwar.
3. Skillful direction by Siddharth and Garima, making a promising debut.
4. Stunning cinematography captures the essence of Gujarat.
5. Well-crafted screenplay with good dialogue.

Negative Points:

1. While the film tackles sensitive themes with maturity, some viewers may find certain moments emotionally challenging.
2. The length of the movie is a bit long in my opinion.
3. I was expecting more focus on the legal aspect of surrogacy.
4. Music is not very impressive, however, in these types of movies, music does not play a significant role, but still.

Overall, “Dukaan” is a brave and compelling exploration of surrogacy, elevated by strong performances, skilful direction, and breathtaking cinematography. It’s a must-watch for those seeking thought-provoking cinema that challenges societal norms. The movie is for those couples who are not able to conceive their own baby but are desperate to become parents.
