A Joint Mission for Women’s Digital Safety

In a noteworthy partnership, the National Commission for Women (NCW) and Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), a distinguished establishment under the Ministry of Home Affairs, partnered to host the Regional Law Review Consultation (Western Region). Addressing the growing threat of cybercrimes against women and investigating workable alternatives for a safer online environment were the main objectives of this important event.

The Dual Impact of Technology

Dr. Anand Kumar Tripathi, RRU’s Dean of Research and Publications, gave opening remarks for the consultation. He emphasized the importance of tackling the negative aspects of the digital age. Women now have more options because of technology, but there are also significant concerns, such as identity theft, cyberbullying, and online exploitation. Dr. Tripathi stated that immediate action is necessary due to the surge in cybercrimes targeting women. The goal of the consultation was to identify weaknesses in the existing legal system and suggest changes to properly handle these issues.

Insights from Distinguished Experts

Several prominent individuals, such as Hon. Justice Soniya Gokani, Shri T.S. Bisht, IPS, and Mrs. Aruna Bahuguna, IPS, contributed to the occasion. They covered a wide range of subjects, including the psychological effects on victims, real-world case studies, and the gaps in cyber legislation.

NCW Deputy Secretary Dr. Shivani Dey reported an alarming increase in internet harassment reports. In these situations, prompt answers are essential. To safeguard victims, we must take legal action more quickly,” she said. Mrs. Bahuguna emphasized the serious psychological effects of cybercrimes and called for gender-sensitive legal systems and unambiguous legislation to address these crimes.

Key Issues Discussed

Experts discussed critical concerns such as:

  • Inadequate Legal Framework: Current cyber laws do not adequately address emerging crimes like deepfake pornography and revenge porn.
  • Privacy and Data Security: Women, especially in rural areas, face heightened risks due to limited digital awareness.
  • Slow Legal Proceedings: Victims often suffer prolonged distress due to delayed justice.

The need for community awareness, faster legal processes, and targeted digital literacy campaigns emerged as pressing priorities.

Transformative Recommendations

The consultation concluded with actionable suggestions to combat cybercrimes, including:

  1. Cyber Helplines: Setting up dedicated helplines at every police station.
  2. Specialized Cybercrime Courts: Establishing fast-track courts for handling cyber offenses.
  3. Digital Literacy Drives: Conducting awareness programs in underserved areas.
  4. Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborating with tech companies to strengthen cybersecurity.

These measures aim to ensure timely support for victims and enhance overall digital safety.

RRU’s Commitment to Change

RRU reaffirmed its commitment to tackling societal issues as a leader in education and national security. Its goal to promote safety, equality, and justice in the digital era is highlighted by this partnership with NCW. RRU keeps paving the road for significant change by encouraging security and policing research and policymaking.
