Shreyas Iyer, Indian T20 Captain: Surya Responds
3 Reasons Why Shreyas Iyer Is The New Indian T20 Captain. BCCI Selectors Make A Massive Move
Suryakumar Yadav Speaks Out After Shreyas Iyer Is Named Captain
Shreyas Iyer has been made the new captain of the Indian T20 team. Following this news, Suryakumar Yadav has shared his thoughts.
The Indian T20 team is going through some big changes at the moment. Amidst these sudden captaincy changes, the former T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav and the new captain Shreyas Iyer came face-to-face during a T20 Mumbai League match. During the toss, Surya gave Iyer a warm hug and congratulated him on his new role. In this match, Suryakumar was leading the Triumph Knights MNE, while Shreyas Iyer played as an Impact Player for the SoBo Mumbai Falcons.
Surya Congratulates Iyer
On Saturday in Mumbai, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar announced Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian T20 team. After this decision, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his happiness and remembered the proud history of Mumbai cricket.
During the toss, Surya said:
“As you said, a lot of things are happening at the same time right now. But honestly, I am very happy for Shreyas that he is getting the chance to lead the Indian T20 team. We both have played a lot of cricket together for Mumbai. The most special thing for me is that three captains from Mumbai in a row have had the honour of leading the Indian T20 team. This is a very proud moment for all of us, and everyone should celebrate it.”
Surya Won the World Cup
The most surprising part of this big change is that Suryakumar Yadav has been completely left out of the upcoming tours. This comes after he led India to win the T20 World Cup on home soil in March 2026. Surya has not been included in the squads for the England and Ireland tours, nor for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. In his place, 31-year-old Shreyas Iyer has been given the captaincy. Iyer has also been the vice-captain of India’s ODI team since October last year.
No Matches Played Since 2023
Interestingly, Shreyas Iyer has not played any T20 International matches for India since December 2023. However, his excellent record as a leader in domestic and IPL cricket made him the top choice for the job.
BCCI has announced the Indian Squad for three different T20 series, one against Ireland, one against England and for the Asian Games.
