Rajnath Singh is one of India’s most senior and experienced political leaders, and he currently serves as the Defence Minister of India. Born on 10 July 1951 in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh, he studied physics and worked as a lecturer before entering politics.

He began his political journey through student activism and rose steadily within the Bharatiya Janata Party. Over time, he held several important positions, including state ministerial roles in Uttar Pradesh, Union minister, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, BJP national president, Home Minister, and finally Defence Minister.

As Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh has overseen a period of major focus on modernisation, self-reliance, and military preparedness. His tenure has emphasised strengthening India’s defence systems, supporting indigenous production, and encouraging research and technology in the armed forces. He has repeatedly spoken about the importance of innovation, preparedness, and national security in a changing global environment.

One of the key themes of his work has been support for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” in defence. This means increasing domestic manufacturing of weapons, equipment, ships, aircraft, and other military platforms. Under this approach, India has tried to reduce dependence on imports and build stronger local defence capabilities. This is important for both national security and long-term strategic independence.

Rajnath Singh is also known for his calm public style and measured political language. He is often seen as a leader who balances political firmness with administrative experience. His long career across different ministries has given him a broad understanding of governance, security, and policy-making.

Before becoming Defence Minister in 2019, he served as Union Home Minister, where he handled internal security issues, law and order matters, and sensitive national challenges. That experience helped shape his later role in the defence ministry, where decisions often require a mix of security thinking, political judgment, and administrative control.

His personal background also reflects discipline and public service. Official profiles note that he holds a master’s degree in physics from Gorakhpur University and was a teacher by profession before entering full-time politics. He is married to Savitri Singh and has children.

Today, Rajnath Singh remains a central figure in Indian politics and national security. His role as Defence Minister is important because India faces complex security challenges along its borders, in the maritime domain, and in emerging areas such as cyber and technology-driven warfare. His leadership continues to shape India’s defence planning, military modernisation, and strategic outlook.
