India Women vs. England Women, Smriti Mandhana T20I Century Score and Analysis

“She was telling me, ‘It’s high time you get a century in T20Is, you keep getting out in the 70s, 80s, and you are not doing justice to your talent’,” says Mandhana.

In an innings of 112 off 62 balls, which thrashed England in the first game of India’s visit, Mandhana became the second player from the India Women’s team to attain the milestone after more than ten years of waiting.

Just two hours before the play began, Mandhana was informed that she would be leaving the team as Harmanpreet Kaur needed to undergo scanning for the concussion injury she received during Wednesday’s warm-up match.

Harmanpreet’s 103 against New Zealand at the 2018 World Cup was surpassed by Mandhana’s score, which was the greatest for India women in T20Is. She joined Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont, Laura Wolvaardt, and Beth Mooney as the first players on her squad to score hundreds in all three forms.

It seemed like a long time for this to happen. Mandhana had hit 50 seven times in her last 12 T20I innings. She has accumulated 30 half-centuries over her career. It appears that Radha thought it was time to give her acting captain some motivation.

“Three days back, Radha Yadav, we were having a conversation,” Mandhana recounted. “I get extremely rough treatment from these girls sometimes. She told me, “You keep getting out in the 70s and 80s and you are not doing justice to your talent and all of that stuff. It’s high time you get a century in T20Is.”

“I was like, ‘okay, Radha, I’ll see now, this time I’ll try and get it in one of the matches in the series’.”
She took off her helmet, grinned widely, and gestured towards the changing room as Mandhana reached the milestone, off just 51 balls with consecutive fours against Lauren Bell.

“I did not think that it would come in the first match, but the finger was towards her, that ‘see, I got it today,'” said Mandhana. “Because you had the chance to lead the squad during the last ten years, and it’s really annoying to be out in the 70s and 80s. I’m glad I was able to stay and lead the team into the 19th and 20th overs.

India defeated England by a resounding 97 runs as Mandhana’s knock helped them reach an impressive 210 for 5, their second-highest total in Twenty20 Internationals. Debutant spinner N Shree Charani claimed 4 for 12.

Harmanpreet, who had been doubtful when she skipped the pre-match press conference, smiled back at Mandhana and cheered as she savoured the occasion. In that case as well, Mandhana filled in for her, and on the eve of the match, she made plans with her bowlers in anticipation of the possibility of doing so on the pitch.

“[Radha] was telling me, ‘It’s high time you get a century in T20Is, you keep getting out in the 70s, 80s and you are not doing justice to your talent'”

“Harman was getting assessed over last night and this morning and there were a few scans to be done,” Mandhana explained. We came up with a 50/50 proposal, so I spoke with the bowlers about the plans. Last night, I felt quite prepared, but today I received confirmation.

Mandhana was an excellent skipper who made devastating use of her spinners. The seasoned Deepti Sharma and Radha helped reduce England to 62 for 4, and she relied on Charani, who entered the game with just five ODIs to her name after making her international debut during the tri-series against Sri Lanka and South Africa in April. She took advantage of Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s struggles against fingerspin this summer, as she was bowled three times in as many matches against West Indies by left-arm spinner Zaida James.

“The way the bowlers bowled and executed the plan, it was just amazing,” Mandhana stated. “That makes our job very, very easy when they bowl like that and they all were really focused, they knew their plans.” In particular, Shree should bowl in the opening game. We got a glimpse of her abilities in the WPL. She always had the appearance of being a really skilled bowler. However, she and all of the other bowlers bowled quite well today.

“After a few wickets fell and Nat was on the one end, the plan was pretty clear to try and execute our best ball to Nat and give a single to her, which they did brilliantly throughout.”

The return of Shafali Verma, who played the opening role alongside Mandhana again, was one event that didn’t quite work out for India. Despite being in a 77-run partnership with an unbeatable batting partner, Shafali found it difficult to get going and managed to score 20 off 22 balls.

“I’ve seen Shafali bat in the last seven, eight days, amazingly well in the nets,” Mandhana stated. Because of the way she’s been striking the ball, I don’t think there will be a significant knock. Naturally, there are different types of nerves while returning to the Indian squad and playing in the first game. I have no doubt that this match will help her feel less nervous.
