“Supreme Court’s decision marks a new era for teachers’ rights in Gujarat, ‘Equal Work, Equal Pay'”
Dr. Manish Doshi, Media Convener and Spokesperson of Gujarat Congress, said that the Supreme Court has given a historic verdict on “equal work, equal pay.” He said the BJP government should immediately follow this verdict.
This verdict is very important for the whole country, especially Gujarat. It fully supports the principle of equal pay for contract-based assistant professors in Gujarat. Because of this, assistant professors who have been working for 10–15 years and facing financial injustice will now get relief.
Dr. Doshi said the Supreme Court’s decision is not only about money. It is also a warning for everyone in the country and in Gujarat. The Supreme Court clearly said in its order that teachers are the real wealth of the country. They don’t just teach—they shape the future of children. Instead of exploiting them financially, they should be paid fairly according to the work they do.
Dr. Doshi criticised the BJP government, saying that its policies have been financially exploiting the youth for years. For the last 15–20 years, more than seven lakh contract-based workers in various government departments, ministries, and boards have been victims of financial injustice. Now, after the Supreme Court verdict, these workers have hope.
This verdict will directly benefit around 210 assistant professors working in government engineering and polytechnic colleges. Sadly, the state government has already terminated about 250 contract-based professors. Only 45–55% of teachers and staff are working in Gujarat’s government engineering and polytechnic colleges.
Even though the M.B. Shah Commission recommended ending the contract system, the state government has done nothing. For years, it has been financially exploiting young people in Gujarat. Now, the Supreme Court verdict has confirmed the principle of equal pay for equal work and given hope to millions of families. Dr. Doshi urged the BJP government to study the verdict carefully and implement it immediately.
Earlier, the Gujarat High Court Division Bench had declared fixed salaries unconstitutional. The fixed salary system was meant to protect young workers from financial injustice. But the BJP government took the matter to the Supreme Court, delaying justice for fixed-salary workers. Dr. Doshi said this shows the BJP’s financial exploitation model in Gujarat, and Congress will fight for the youth to get justice in the coming days.
