Swarrnim Institute of Law Marks Constitution Day with Keynote Address and Student Engagement Activities
Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University’s Swarrnim Institute of Law commemorated Constitution Day on Thursday with academic and cultural activities. The idea behind the event was to make students understand the importance and relevance of India’s constitutional values. Some 100 students participated in the event, held at the Bhoyan Rathod campus, situated in Adalaj, Gandhinagar.
Constitution Day, observed every year on 26 November, marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949. Schools and colleges across India conduct activities to honour the makers of the Constitution and to help students understand democratic processes. The Swarrnim event continued this tradition by encouraging students to explore the evolution of rights, duties and the power of constitutional law. Students were also reminded how every citizen plays a role in upholding justice, liberty and equality.
Dr Dixit Patel, Dean and Principal (in charge) of Swarrnim Institute of Law, gave the opening remarks. He spoke about the importance of legal education and how law students shape the justice system. Legal studies in India have seen major growth, with more students choosing law as a career due to increasing awareness, opportunities in public policy and demand for skilled advocates. Colleges today focus on practical learning through moot courts, internships and research discussions, similar to the initiatives at Swarrnim.
Dr Kanak Makwana, Principal, NavGujarat Law College, Gandhinagar, delivered the keynote address during the ceremony. He talked about the vision of Dr BR Ambedkar and the continuing relevance of the constitutional principles in democracy today. Dr Ambedkar, known as the architect of the Indian Constitution, believed in equality for all, protection of fundamental rights and social upliftment. His ideas continue to guide law-making and the interpretation of human rights. Many universities use his writings as teaching material to help students understand legal ethics and public policy.
A panel discussion on ‘Constitution and Modern Challenges’, featuring faculty and student voices on judicial interpretation, constitutional amendments, and contemporary socio-legal issues, was also organised. Such dialogues help young learners think critically about legal reforms and the balance between rights and restrictions in a modern society. India has seen public debate on issues such as data privacy, gender equality, digital rights and environmental safeguards. Discussions like these make students aware of how laws must evolve with a changing society.
That apart, an interactive quiz on constitutional law and cultural presentations, including skits and patriotic performances, added student-led energy to the celebration. Activity-based learning is now widely adopted in law schools across India, as it builds confidence, public speaking skills and teamwork. Cultural performances reflect the spirit of unity and remind students that law is closely linked with society, history and identity.
Ms Deviya Patel, Assistant Professor, served as faculty coordinator, with student coordinator Hitansh Jayswal supporting event execution. Faculty-student partnerships help strengthen campus culture and leadership skills. Student coordinators often gain experience in event planning, research handling and public communication, which benefits them in internships and future careers. Events like Constitution Day celebrations play a key role in shaping socially responsible citizens and future legal professionals.
The event concluded with students taking away a deeper understanding of the Constitution and its real-world importance. Many institutions now focus on constitutional literacy, encouraging students to know their rights and duties. With regular discussions, competitions and expert lectures, campuses help create informed youth who can contribute responsibly to the nation.
