Teachers’ Day at DPS-Bopal Includes Awards for 52 Educators
DPS-Bopal Teachers’ Day puts teachers and classroom learning at the centre
Teachers took centre stage at Delhi Public School-Bopal as the school marked Teachers’ Day with awards, student performances and a classroom activity that allowed children to experience the work of a teacher for themselves.
The programme brought together students, teachers and school officials for a morning centred on the contribution of educators. A key part of the event was the presentation of awards to teachers. Twenty-three teachers received the Kalorex Core Values Awards, while 29 teachers were recognised through the Performance Quotient Awards and Student Topper Incentive Awards.
The second set of awards was linked to the performance of students in Grades X and XII in the Board Examinations. The awards recognised teachers whose academic guidance helped students prepare for the examinations and achieve strong results.
The school also presented its Overall ETP, or Excellent Teachers Program, under the theme “Differentiated Instruction and Innovations in Teaching-Learning Practices”. The theme focuses on the need for teachers to adapt classroom methods to suit students with different learning needs.
The awards form part of a longer practice at DPS-Bopal of recognising teachers through the Kalorex system. School records from earlier years show that teachers have received Kalorex Core Values and Performance Quotient awards at Teachers’ Day programmes in the past. In 2023, for example, 26 teachers received the Kalorex Core Values Awards and 35 received Performance Quotient Awards. The numbers and award categories have varied over the years.
Delhi Public School-Bopal is a CBSE-affiliated co-educational school in Ahmedabad and has been operating since 1996. It is promoted by the Kalorex Foundation and is part of the wider Kalorex education group, which has worked in school education since 1995. The group also operates other education projects in Gujarat.
The Teachers’ Day programme began with a floral tribute to Goddess Saraswati and Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Radhakrishnan, a former President of India and a respected scholar and teacher, is closely associated with Teachers’ Day in India, which is observed on September 5, his birth anniversary.
Students then performed a Guru Vandan dance. The programme moved from the traditional tribute to music, dance and other student presentations.
Principal Ms Sabina Sawhney addressed the gathering and thanked the teaching staff for their work with students. Her remarks focused on the daily role of teachers in encouraging children to ask questions, develop confidence and make progress in their studies.
The Head Boy and Head Girl also spoke during the programme. Their speeches centred on the part teachers play in helping students develop their talents and prepare for greater responsibility.
For the students, the most direct lesson came inside the classroom.
As part of a special Teachers’ Day activity, students took over the role of teachers and conducted lessons for their classmates. The exercise required them to prepare material, explain a subject, manage a class and keep other students involved.
The activity gave students a chance to see some of the work that normally happens before and during a lesson. Teaching requires preparation as well as knowledge of the subject. A teacher also has to respond when students do not understand a point, manage different levels of learning and keep the class moving.
The approach fits with the school’s wider focus on teacher training. DPS-Bopal has held professional development programmes for its educators, including training on value education. The school’s published material says such training has covered values such as empathy, respect, honesty, responsibility and cooperation in classroom practice.
The Teachers’ Day programme also included a fashion show and dance performances by students. Music formed another part of the programme, giving students opportunities to perform before their teachers and peers.
The assembly ended with a Vote of Thanks from the Vice Head Boy and Vice Head Girl. They thanked the teachers, students and others involved in organising the programme.
The celebrations continued beyond the assembly. Teachers were hosted for a special lunch called ‘Flavours of Gratitude’.
Teachers’ Day at DPS-Bopal has taken different forms in recent years, but student participation has remained a common feature. The school’s 2024 Teachers’ Day programme also included students taking on teachers’ roles, along with performances and teacher awards.
This year’s programme placed that role reversal alongside formal recognition for teachers. The combination gave students two ways to look at teaching: through the awards presented on stage and through the experience of handling a classroom themselves.
For a school community, that distinction matters. Awards can recognise results and service, while the classroom activity gave students a practical view of what happens behind a lesson. Together, the two parts of the programme kept the focus on the work teachers do each day.
The event closed with students and teachers sharing a day of performances, recognition and classroom participation, with the teaching profession remaining at the centre of the school’s Teachers’ Day observance.
