The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the blocking of 22 YouTube-based news stations, four of which are from Pakistan, on the grounds that they are propagating false information that could harm national security, foreign relations, and public order.

It is the first time since the introduction of the IT Rules, 2021 in February last year that action has been taken against Indian YouTube-based news providers.

The ministry issued an order on Monday to restrict 22 YouTube channels, three Twitter accounts, one Facebook account, and one news website, according to an official statement.

Since December 2021, the ministry has issued orders to prohibit 78 YouTube-based news stations and many other social media accounts on national security concerns. national security, sovereignty, India’s integrity, public order, and so forth.

According to the government, 18 Indian and four Pakistani YouTube news channels have been blocked as a result of the recent banning order.

The ministry said in an official statement that the prohibited YouTube channels had a combined audience of over 260 crores and that they were propagating fake news and coordinated disinformation on social media on matters vital to national security, India’s foreign relations, and public order.

Multiple YouTube channels, according to the government, were utilized to spread fake news on the Indian Armed Forces, Jammu and Kashmir, and other topics.

Certain anti-India content posted from various social media accounts run in a coordinated manner from Pakistan was also ordered to be blocked.

It was discovered that Indian YouTube channels had released a substantial amount of misleading content relating to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, with the intent of damaging India’s foreign relations with other countries, according to the report.

According to the ministry, the prohibited Indian YouTube channels were using templates and logos from specific TV news programs, as well as photographs of their news anchors, to deceive viewers into believing the content was genuine.

To promote the virality of content on social media, false thumbnails were utilized, and the title and thumbnail of the videos were regularly changed. It was also discovered in some cases that systematic anti-India fake news was coming from Pakistan, according to the report.
