The well-known United Way Garba from Sanskar Nagari Vadodara is coming to Ahmedabad for the first time. The stage design will follow Vadodara’s style, and preparations are going on with full excitement. Every year, Garba programs are held with new concepts and fresh energy. This year, the special highlight is the launch of the United Way of Ahmedabad Garba. Inspired by Vadodara’s rich culture, the event will take place at the V-9 Cricket Ground in Science City.
Vadodara’s United Way Garba is famous worldwide. It holds a Guinness World Record for being one of the largest Garba events, with lakhs of dancers joining every year. Bringing such a format to Ahmedabad shows how the city is becoming a new hub for Navratri celebrations. Science City’s V-9 ground, with modern infrastructure and a big space, will give visitors a safe and enjoyable experience.
Event founders Yug Makwana, Prachi Fofaria, and Jigar Barot shared that after the tradition of street Garba, group and mandli Garba became popular. Now they want to bring the style of Vadodara’s Sugam Sangeet Garba to Ahmedabad, which people will surely enjoy. They said the stage has been designed in the Vadodara style, with the main stage placed in the centre of the ground. A special “flower Garba” will also be organised, which will connect the youth with traditional cultural values.
Sugam Sangeet, a form of Gujarati music that blends classical and folk, has always been part of Vadodara’s identity. By bringing it to Ahmedabad, organisers want to give people a soulful and traditional experience, far from the DJ-based Garba that dominates many places today. The flower Garba, where petals are showered during prayers, is another tradition from Vadodara that symbolises devotion and purity.
The venue will be decorated with folk art like Warli painting and clay art. Organisers said this effort is not only about Garba but also about celebrating Gujarati art and heritage.
Warli art comes from Maharashtra but is widely respected across India as a tribal form that connects people with nature. Combining Warli designs with Gujarati clay work and traditional decor brings a mix of cultures that both locals and tourists will admire. Many Navratri events are now trying to highlight eco-friendly and heritage-based themes, and this fits perfectly.
According to the organisers of The United Waves of Ahmedabad, last year, they visited more than 20 Navratri events. They noticed how the trend of mandli Garba spread everywhere. That inspired them to bring United Way Garba to Ahmedabad in the same format as Vadodara. The concept of Sugam Garba, where people can dance continuously for 30 minutes and still feel fresh, will be part of this event. This idea, which is the identity of United Way Vadodara, will now give Ahmedabad a new identity too.
Mandli Garba is when large groups dance in circles with planned steps. It is different from solo or couple dancing and has become very popular with youngsters in Gujarat. Ahmedabad has always been known for its “Sheri Garba” in narrow lanes. With mandli Garba entering big grounds, the city is seeing a cultural shift.
The ground will hold up to 10,000 Garba lovers, and the excitement among people is already very high. Passes are priced between Rs. 699 and Rs. 1199. Phase one passes of Rs. 699 are already sold out, while phase two passes of Rs. 1199 are now on sale. Just like Vadodara, where paying-guest women get free passes, here too, around 1,000 women will receive free passes. They will be selected after filling out forms.
This shows how big the demand is for Garba passes. In Vadodara, United Way passes are often sold out weeks before Navratri begins. Offering free passes to paying-guest women is a tradition that started in Vadodara to make sure students and working girls feel included and safe. The same idea in Ahmedabad will attract youth and newcomers to join confidently.
Two days before Navratri, a pre-Navratri celebration will take place, where famous city influencers and more than 19 singers will join.
Pre-Navratri events have become popular across Gujarat. They help build excitement and also give performers a platform to connect with audiences early. Influencers joining shows how social media is now deeply tied to Garba culture, making it a mix of tradition and modern lifestyle.
The theme of this Garba is No Plastic – Go Green. Like in Vadodara, the Garba will have a centre stage with people dancing around it. The event will start with three claps after the evening aarti, just like in United Way Vadodara. On the centre stage, singer Vasudev Patadiya and his 19-member team will perform.
The three claps after the aarti are a symbolic start of Garba, reminding people of its devotional roots. Having Vasudev Patadiya, a well-loved singer, ensures traditional Garba songs stay alive. The Go Green initiative is also very important, as Gujarat has seen many big festivals turn eco-friendly to reduce waste.
To support the eco-friendly theme, there will be no use of plastic. Also, only digital passes will be given to Garba lovers. Digital passes reduce paper waste and also make entry smooth and safe. With thousands attending, using technology ensures security, easy tracking, and a modern festival experience.
