A Roaring Start at Pokhran Range
The Pokhran range near Jaisalmer reverberated with the thunderous applause of spectators on February 17, 2024, as the Indian Air Force (IAF) unveiled its formidable offensive capabilities. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, adorned the event as the Chief Guest, adding a touch of grandeur to the spectacle.
The event commenced with three Chetak helicopters proudly trooping the National Flag and the Air Force ensign, accompanied by the National Anthem. Following this patriotic display, a Rafale aircraft soared through the sky, creating a perfectly timed ‘Sonic Boom,’ setting the stage for an enthralling showcase.
Precision in Motion – Jaguar’s Low-Level Reconnaissance
Two Jaguar aircraft, flying at low levels, followed the Rafale, capturing high-fidelity reconnaissance images of the area below. This aerial reconnaissance was a prelude to the main event, highlighting the IAF’s precision and strategic approach.
In sync with this year’s theme, ‘Lightning Strike from the Sky,’ the IAF showcased over 120 aircraft, illustrating its offensive prowess in both day and night scenarios. Fighter aircraft including Rafale, Su-30 MKI, MiG-29, Mirage-2000, Tejas, and Hawk engaged in simulated attacks on ground and air targets with deadly precision.
AtmaNirbhar Bharat Takes Flight
In a demonstration of self-reliance, the indigenously built Tejas aircraft exhibited its swing-role capability. It successfully destroyed an aerial target with a missile and engaged a ground target with bombs, showcasing India’s progress in building indigenous defence technology.
Highlighting technological advancements, the IAF unveiled a long-range unmanned drone, showcasing pinpoint accuracy by destroying a simulated enemy radar site. The Rafale, armed with beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, engaged an aerial target, underlining the IAF’s readiness for modern combat scenarios.
Transport aircraft played a crucial role in combat support operations, featuring a Containerised Delivery System drop by a C-17 heavy-lift aircraft and an assault landing by a C-130J carrying IAF Special Forces, Garuds. The IAF Chinook helicopters showcased rapid deployment by airlifting the Indian Army’s M-777 Ultra-Light Howitzers in an underslung mode.
Apache Unleashed – A New Dimension
A significant debut unfolded as the Apache attack helicopter demonstrated its firepower, engaging targets with Air to Ground guided missiles. Mi-17 helicopters joined the spectacle, attacking ground targets with rockets. Joint operations with the Indian Army’s weaponized Advanced Light Helicopters Mk-IV added intensity to the demonstration.
As the sun set, Garuds inserted by Mi-17 helicopters executed an ‘Urban Intervention,’ showcasing their proficiency in anti-terror/insurgency operations. This added a realistic dimension to the event, demonstrating the IAF’s commitment to securing the nation.
Indigenous Air Defence Systems Illuminate the Night
As darkness descended, indigenous Air Defence Systems – Akash and SAMAR missile systems – took the spotlight, destroying multiple aerial targets. This showcased India’s self-sufficiency in securing its airspace, even under the cover of night.
The night events featured the Light Combat Helicopter ‘Prachand’ neutralizing designated targets with rockets. Jaguar and Su-30 MKI, dropping heavy calibre and area weapons, demonstrated the IAF’s strategic bombing capabilities in the nocturnal hours.
Introducing a layer of sophistication, Remotely Piloted Aircraft conducted a live bomb damage assessment of all targets, streaming the footage in real-time to the operations centre and the audience. This emphasized the IAF’s dedication to precision and accountability.
Nighttime showcased the Akashganga team’s free-fall drop and C-130J’s flare dispensing, creating a mesmerizing spectacle against the dark sky. The Tri-service band continued to enchant, fostering a sense of unity among the armed forces.
Quantifying the Might – 50 Tonnes in Two Hours
During the display, a staggering 50 tonnes of ordnance were dropped within a concise two-hour span, covering a two-square-kilometer area. This quantifiable measure underscored the IAF’s commitment to maintaining a potent and effective defence.
