Liverpool defeated Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby on Sunday to close to within a point of Premier League leaders Manchester City and drop Everton into the relegation zone. Burnley beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Turf Moor to move out of the bottom three for the first time since October, adding to Everton’s woes.

Chelsea stayed in third place, but only beat West Ham United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to a last-minute goal from American Christian Pulisic. The city has 80 points from 33 games after beating Watford 5-1 on Saturday, while Liverpool has 79 points from the same number of games. Chelsea is in third place with 65 points, while Arsenal is in fourth place with 60 points.

At Anfield, Liverpool struggled against a tenacious Everton side, but it was derby specialist Divock Origi, who is typically a periphery player, who changed the game in Juergen Klopp’s favor. Klopp’s decision to bring on Origi and Colombian winger Luis Diaz in the 60th minute paid off immediately.

Two minutes after the substitution, Belgian striker Origi connected up with Mohamed Salah, who floated across to the back post, where fullback Andy Robertson headed it in. Then, five minutes from time, Origi sealed the victory by heading in after Luis Diaz’s magnificent attempted volley bounced to him at the back post.

Origi has now scored six goals in nine Premier League outings versus Everton. “It’s a nice album.” I only think about making plays and playing football while I’m on the field. We were in desperate need of it today. It was a difficult game; we expected it to be difficult in the final games. “The most important thing is that we gained the three points at the end,” he remarked.

Everton faces a tense finish to the season as they attempt to maintain their Premier League record of never having been relegated since its inception. Lampard’s team is now in 18th place with 29 points from 32 games, two points ahead of Burnley, who has played one more game.

Since sacking long-term manager Sean Dyche and replacing him with caretaker Mike Jackson, the Clarets have gained seven points from three games, giving them renewed hope of survival. Burnley defeated eighth-placed Wolves thanks to a 62nd-minute goal from Czech forward Matej Vydra, who converted a low cross from Dutchman Wout Weghorst.

Chelsea broke a run of back-to-back home league defeats when substitute Pulisic came in the area at the right time to guide in a pass from Marcos Alonso in the 90th minute, just minutes after Jorginho saw a penalty saved by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Following a check by the Video Assistant Referee following a clumsy foul on substitute Romelu Lukaku that resulted in the penalty, West Ham defender Craig Dawson was issued a red card. Southampton rescued a point at Brighton & Hove Albion with a 2-2 draw at the Amex Stadium thanks to stunning long-range strikes from skipper James Ward-Prowse in each half.

Graham Potter’s team had been cruising courtesy of an early Danny Welbeck strike and an own goal by Mohammed Salisu, but Ward-Prowse ignited a comeback by scoring directly from a free-kick and completing it with a ferocious low shot from 22 yards.

On Monday, Crystal Palace will face Leeds United, who are currently in relegation trouble.
