In Ahmedabad, India,

ZEISS Group is taking a proactive stance in the fight against diabetic eye diseases during National Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. With a staggering 10.1 crore reported cases of diabetes in India as of 2023, the country is at the forefront of the global diabetes challenge. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), a diabetes complication, is a leading cause of vision loss.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research – India Diabetes (ICMR INDIAB) study, approximately one in five people with diabetes in India, around 13 million individuals, are affected by some level of Diabetic Retinopathy. Out of these, 6.5 million people face the more severe form of DR, posing a serious threat to their vision (source: ResearchGate).

Recognizing the urgency for advanced technology to effectively diagnose and manage DR, the ZEISS Medical Technology Division is playing a crucial role in this effort. Dr. Gazala Mansuri, a Retina Specialist at Occura Eye Hospital in Ahmedabad, highlights the importance of ZEISS’s innovative technology in early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy.

ZEISS’s commitment is evident in its Retina Workflow, which focuses on four key stages: Assess and Educate, Plan, Treat, and Check.

Assess and Educate Stage:

This step involves thorough examinations with ZEISS Slit Lamps, ZEISS CIRRUS OCT, and ZEISS CLARUS widefield fundus camera, providing essential diagnostic insights. ZEISS CIRRUS offers detailed cross-sectional images of the retina, vital for diagnosing DR, while ZEISS CLARUS aids in early detection and treatment planning.

Planning Stage:

ZEISS enables the linking of high-resolution OCT and ultra-widefield images through the ZEISS Retina Workplace software, helping doctors make better-informed decisions and create effective treatment plans.

Treatment Stage:

ZEISS ARTEVO 800, the first digital microscope, provides high-quality images for the effective treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Additionally, the ZEISS VISULAS Green Therapeutic Laser System is a significant advancement, offering precise and controlled laser delivery essential for retinal laser procedures.

Check Stage:

Checking the effectiveness of treatment is crucial. ZEISS Retina Workplace allows doctors to record treatment decisions over time, helping assess treatment effectiveness by comparing structural changes with one click.

In reaffirming its commitment to battling Diabetic Retinopathy, Carl Zeiss India’s Medical Technology Division recognizes that the future of managing this condition relies not only on groundbreaking technology but also on the relentless dedication of healthcare professionals.
