Growing up in Ahmedabad, Dhanji spent a lot of time at the well-known Drive-in Cinema in the city. More than just movie theatres, those locations served as gathering spaces for people to laugh, eat, and tell stories. Dhanji absorbed it all as a child and is now returning the favour to the city where he grew up through his music.

“This CD is honest and unvarnished. At its core, it’s freestyle. It’s directly from the streets where I was raised,” Dhanji remarked. “It’s the new voice of Ahmedabad’s youth—it’s not just music.”

Rasla produced the album, which blends contemporary sounds, lyrical storytelling, and freestyle rap. Although each song has a hint of Ahmedabad, they are all new and international. Dhanji and Rasla have ensured that every rhythm seems both local and universal, whether it’s through the language, slang, or stories of the city’s youth.

“Every beat contains the experience of Ahmedabad,” Rasla revealed. Regardless of whether they reside in Manhattan or Maninagar, this album is dedicated to all Gujaratis.

A special listening session was held at the Vivanta Hotel in Ahmedabad to commemorate the album’s release. Fans saw the CD firsthand and sensed the passion in Rasla’s beats and Dhanji’s remarks. Many said that it felt like Ahmedabad itself was communicating to them, and that it was more than just a music festival.

“Drive-In Cinema 2.1” isn’t your typical record. It highlights the contemporary Gujarati identity. Many young Gujaratis may identify with the stories it tells and the way it plays with the native language. As a result, Dhanji’s album has become a sort of cultural festival that links young Gujaratis in India and abroad.

This album catches everything, from upscale cafés bustling with college students to tiny alleyways selling fafda-jalebi. It’s like a musical photo book capturing the pulse of the city.

“Drive-In Cinema 2.1” is currently available on all major streaming services if you wish to experience Ahmedabad through music. Simply put on your headphones and let Dhanji to transport you through the vibrant streets of Ahmedabad, Mumbai, New York, or Sydney.
